After seasons of girly skimmers and playful wedges, designers from Moschino to Marc Jacobs have crossed over to the more grownup side of footwear. Like many of this fall’s looks, the oxford bootie takes inspiration from the masculine—in this case, that most conservative of men’s shoes—but with a cheeky feminine twist, employing luxe materials like patent leather and satin (not to mention stratospheric stilettos). The sexed-up style can lend sophistication to a boyish vest-and-jeans combo, or just as easily put an attention-getting spin on a simple shirtdress. And while they’ll never be as comfy as flats and flip-flops, these pumps’ come-hither allure is worth a bit of pain.

From top, Moschino Cheap & Chic brown patent leather, $460, Barneys New York; multicolored satin, $725, Marc Jacobs; black suede and gold patent leather, $635, Gucci.
