Hockey player Marvin Degon has a passion for two things: the ice, and his new wife, Taryn. After his first pro road trip game in 2006, he ran upstairs to Taryn’s hotel room and said, "I’m so happy to have you be a part of this moment, I want us to do this forever." He got down on one knee, pulled out a keychain, and asked her to marry him. She said yes (they later designed a proper ring together). The pair, who met in high school math class at Cushing Academy, settled in for a long engagement. They finally tied the knot last summer at Belle Mer—"the closest we could come to a destination wedding without leaving the country," says Taryn—and promptly moved to Germany, where Marvin now plays for the Wolfsburg Grizzly Adams. How’s that for scoring a goal?

Newlyweds Taryn Berk and Marvin Degon bribed their ring bearer with a train set to get him to sit still for photos.

Marvin and Taryn share their first dance.

Taryn and her father, Jim, take the dance floor.

During a notoriously wet summer, the couple lucked out with a rain-free day.

Guests enjoyed Godiva chocolate mini-wedding cakes and Champagne flutes as favors.

East Greenwich, Rhode Island–based Scrumptions created the flower-topped cake in two-tone buttercream.

Belle Mer’s Island House provided a beachy, informal setting.  The bride’s five-year-old cousin, Nicholas, wore a replica of the groomsmen’s attire for his role as ring-bearer.

Halfway through the reception, Taryn changed into a less formal gown, also by Carolina Herrera.

Although the wind proved to be the day’s biggest challenge (at one point, the bride’s veil took flight), cool breezes provided welcome relief from the heat.
