When it comes to spring jewelry, Michele Mercaldo says go big or go home.
FOR TWO DECADES, MICHELE MERCALDO HAS BEEN the Jil Sander of local jewelry design, offering beautifully restrained pieces like petite stud earrings and delicate necklaces with a mod edge. But this 32-carat aquamarine, purchased from an India-based gem dealer, is something of a game-changer: “I knew I might never see a stone like this again,” Mercaldo says. It inspired an entire new collection of bold, colorful pieces. Emphasizing the rock’s shape with an 18-karat-gold setting, she found the big-is-beautiful aesthetic to be irresistible. And really, who wouldn’t?
