Boston magazine: March 2010: Connoisseur: Shopping: TestingÂ…The Solid-Gold Facial: Rachel Baker
As thoroughly modern consumers, we’d written off gold skin-treatments as a relic of the boom days, right alongside caviar pedis. So when La Residencia Spa recently added a 24-karat gold facial ($250) to its menu, our interest was piqued.
At the homey spa, owner Jane Aransky explained that while most "gold" facials involve gold powder mixed with creams for a glam sheen, hers uses solid gold leaf that is rubbed into skin for a rejuvenating effect. (The concept makes sense—gold is an anti-inflammatory, and is often used to treat arthritis via injection.) Along with the gold, the 18-step, two-hour process employs exotic ingredients like edelweiss from the Alps. Afterward, our skin glowed, leading us to believe Aransky’s claim that she has customers lining up for repeat treatments. Though the price is heavy, this facial earns its metal. 336 Elliot St., Newton Upper Falls, 617-244-2280, laresidenciaspa.com.
