Person of Interest: Things You Didn’t Know: Meghna Chakrabarti
Person of Interest
WBUR LISTENERS MAY ALREADY KNOW Meghna Chakrabarti’s voice, but they’re about to become much more familiar with the longtime reporter: Starting 5/3, she takes over as host of the revamped news show Radio Boston. In the spirit of getting better acquainted, she divulges three little-known autobiographical details:
She has a master’s degree from Harvard in environmental science. I really enjoyed school, but I knew in my heart I didn’t want to do it as a career. One day, I was chopping tomatoes in my kitchen and listening to this awesome NPR piece by Anna Bensted. I wrote her a letter out of the blue, she actually responded, and I became her intern.
She had a short career as a novelist. The summer after I finished grad school, I said to myself, "You’ve always loved to write; you’ve got some crazy ideas; you’re unemployed." But I wasn’t trying to be Jhumpa Lahiri: It was total chick lit.
She actually likes reporting on the MBTA. Every T story I’ve done highlights a particular flavor of Massachusetts policy and politics. I think it’s fascinating to watch how something as mundane as railroad tracks stitches the region together literally and figuratively.
