CONSIDER THESE TIDINGS of joy: This Christmas season, the city endures three discrete stagings of The Nutcracker. Yes, Boston Ballet, BalletROX, and José Mateo Ballet Theatre all put their own precious spin on the convoluted, interminable story of a little girl, a toy soldier, a Sugar Plum Fairy, and a giant mouse. While it’s true that Tchaikovsky’s ballet has somehow made itself as much a part of the American holiday experience as passive-aggressive in-laws and maxed-out credit cards, anything more than one production per year per city borders on spite. Fruitcake long ago cornered the market on Christmas cruelties that "the spirit of the season" requires us to endure in abundance. We surely don’t need three slices of Nutcracker, too.
