Let the Band Play On

By Jason Schwartz | Boston Magazine |

IT HAPPENS EVERY YEAR on the Fourth, just as surely as the cannon blasts in the 1812 Overture. The Boston Pops finish their set of patriotic tunes and, with the whole nation watching on CBS, fireworks start to light up the Charles River…and Kesha or some other Top 40 nonsense starts playing. CBS then treats us to a medley of out-of-place pop music as the fireworks go on. It’s embarrassing. Placating the tastes of all those viewers out in Real America isn’t worth sacrificing our dignity. Wasn’t it enough that the Pops’ musical guest last year was country star Toby Keith? Stop it! Just let the Pops keep playing. They’re our signature ensemble — nobody does Independence Day like them. Boston practically invented the Fourth of July, damn it. Let’s not let the rest of the country ruin it.
