BOSTON—Boston magazine announced today the promotions of James Burnett to editor and Daniel Scully to president.

“After a long, rigorous search for Boston magazine’s next editor, the path has led us back to our own offices,” said Boston magazine president Daniel Scully. “James Burnett, who has served as acting editor for past seven months, is the right person for the job. Each issue under James has been better than the issue that preceded it.

“We met with a lot of terrific candidates through the editor search process,” Scully added. “Going through that process, and comparing James with an excellent field, gave us all the confidence we needed to choose James. This was not a default selection—James earned and won this job. He has what it takes to bring Boston magazine to great new heights.”

Burnett came to Boston magazine in June 2002 from New York, where he was a staff writer at George magazine. He was promoted to senior writer the following April and went on to hold the positions of associate editor and senior editor before rising to executive editor in November 2005. He has been acting editor of the magazine since June. In 2003, a cover story he edited won the gold medal for reader service from the City and Regional Magazine Association. Burnett’s freelance work has appeared in Details, New York, Runner’s World, Rolling Stone, and the British soccer glossy Four Four Two. A 1998 graduate of Duke University, he lives in Cambridge with his wife, Sophie, and son, Henry.

Daniel Scully has also been promoted from executive vice president to president, and will now oversee all divisions of Boston magazine.

“It is with great pleasure that I announce that Dan Scully has been promoted to president of Boston magazine,” said David H. Lipson Jr., president of the magazine’s parent company, Metrocorp. “Dan has demonstrated strong leadership at the magazine and is our most highly recognized ambassador in the Boston community. We feel confident that with Dan at the helm, our best years are surely in front of us.”

Scully began his career working in newsstand sales at the New York Times Magazine Group and Dell Publishing. He has been at Boston magazine since 1984, and has held the positions of newsstand sales manager, business manager, general manager, managing director, publisher, and executive vice president. A Boston native and a graduate of Bates College, he lives in Chestnut Hill.

WHY NOT ASK JIM GORDON TOUGHER QUESTIONS?

COMMENT:
Jime Burnett discussed none of the substantive issues in the Cape Wind controversy. This was bad journalism at its best...pure puffery. And, it is clear from some of the his questions that Mr. Burnett knows nothing at all about the project or Jim Gordon. How does one write a worthwhile piece while mired in ignorance? Jim Gordon never "lived" on Cape Cod, for example.
