In shades of purple and brown, fall makeup’s rich tones suit every face.

Makeup gets sweet as fall’s new all-over chocolate palette replaces the paler shades of summer. Newbury Street makeup artist Katrina Hess, beloved by socialites and satisfied brides, breaks down the trends that dominated the runways and shows how—and how not—to apply them to your own look. 1. Gold and bronze shadows are ideal for younger eyes; chocolate shades work on everyone. PRO’S PICK: Vincent Longo Wet Diamond Shimmer shadow, $24, Sephora. TIP: Shimmer does not mean sparkle. “The new versions create a soft, much more natural glow,” Hess says.
2. Since eyes and lips are heavy, foundation should be sheer and light. Or opt for mineral powder for a non-pore-clogging finish. PRO’S PICK: Susan Posnick Colorflo foundation, $64, Katrina Hess. TIP: Always apply liquid foundation with a damp sponge.
