He's with Tom

He started out as a Patriots intern. Then Will McDonough made a very important friend, and got himself a much, much sweeter job.

Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen avoid the paparazzi in New York. Will McDonough is over Brady's left shoulder.
A Player's Playbook
Will McDonough's path to…whatever it is he does.

1. Anonymity (1997): Begins interning with Pats as a BC freshman. Tom Brady's Michigan Wolverines win national title, with Brady on the bench.

2. Fortuity (2002): Hired full time in Pats' community relations department. Proves particularly adept at relating to Brady.

3. Ascendancy (2004): While still on Patriots' payroll, McDonough assumes vaguely defined role as red-hot Brady's aide-de-camp.

4. Notoriety (2005):
Makes his first appearance in Herald gossip column Inside Track, as Brady's "bud."

5. Indispensability (2006):
McDonough reportedly introduces Brady to über-model Gisele Bündchen.

6. Ubiquity (2008):
A constant at Brady's side, McDonough begins to parlay his growing mystique into new opportunities.

Tom Brady appeared to the world in his underwear on April 16, 2005. The occasion was Saturday Night Live. A skit called for Brady to play a pants-less stud who charms ladies in the workplace. Even in briefs, Brady flashed some élan. For the reserved quarterback, it was a ballsy, half-naked bootleg into the New York limelight.

Already, Brady was dating a beautiful actress. Nestled among her boyfriend's family, Bridget Moynahan beamed from the front row. Also watching were some of Brady's closest friends on the Patriots, Dan Koppen and Larry Izzo. In their way, they had all helped lay the foundation for Brady's burgeoning celebrity. And now, in his way, he was leaving them behind to crack into a new realm of stardom, a world that would soon offer up GQ covers, Visa endorsements, and Brazilian supermodels. Only one person in the audience that night would join Brady on this catapult ride to greater fame. His name was Will McDonough. He was an unexpected choice.

McDonough first pinged on the public radar three days after the SNL show, popping up in that fabulous junkyard of faux journalism, the Boston Herald's Inside Track. He was described therein simply as "Tom's bud." In the years to come, as it grew apparent to hacks and flacks across town that Tom's bud had been entrusted with a mysterious authority over Tom, McDonough became something more. He was Brady's "assistant" or his "Man Friday." When the gossipmongers were in a less generous mood, he was called a "butler" or a "pantry man."

But McDonough's role in Brady's life has always been more substantial. For those who don't remember, Brady was not all that long ago a floppy-haired underdog who favored blazers with elbow patches. Even after his early on-field success, he retained a dorky aw-shucks style. He hated the podium and was unprepared for celebrity. Then, before our eyes, he became the metrosexual who now flits about Europe, paparazzi in his wake. These days Brady seems quite comfortable in his underwear, accessorized perhaps with a sweaty bottle of Smartwater and some Stetson cologne. Compared with Peyton Manning, who hams it up for the NFL's yeasty audience and wouldn't be caught dead in a Movado watch, Brady is a fey extraterrestrial. He has leveraged his appeal in a restrained fashion that transcends his sport. The approach might even be called elegant. But the process has not been intuitive. Brady has needed help. That's where McDonough comes in.

Although his duties are shrouded in secrecy, McDonough is a de facto manager; he brokers deals and acts as a gatekeeper. Brady seems to trust him implicitly. McDonough has had a major hand in the quarterback's metamorphosis—and along the way has become an important man in his own right. One weekend, the Boston College grad might be hobnobbing with hedge fund managers. The next, he could be jetting to a celebrity-studded party. Always, he remains deeply connected to Brady as both a business associate and a best friend. Their relationship raises eyebrows, not least because of its clandestine nature. On the Patriots' payroll until this past February, McDonough has now left the team to handle Brady's affairs on his own. He has no official title. His business card simply lists his name, phone, and e-mail. It's all so East Berlin.

Among both casual observers and Brady's friends, the question comes up time and again: Just what in hell does Will McDonough do?

No one fully knows.

I have known Will for many years. He is, in fact, a great business person and very driven. He is so friendly, respectful, hard-working and most importantly- a good friend. The words spoken about him are unfair and written by people who don't know him. I wish that people would share their feelings with Will and not in a magazine chat room.

In a really fascinating article and very well written piece, Brady's E, Will McDonough, is credited with the quarterback's rise from awkward media interviewee to a stylish, model-dating, European-vacationing metrosexual. Depending on your particular persuasion this either makes McDonough the anti-christ or Jesus. Meet Tom Brady's one man entourage, a 28 year old guy who joined the Patriots in 1997 as an intern and now takes care of everything Brady. Including introducing him to Gisele. click here

Will McDonough, businessman? From dressing his "friend" in designer clothes to teaching him how to walk the walk (even though not in stilettos on a streetcorner), Will McDonough's business acumen has been around for centuries, this is just a modern twist. Then maybe you need to reconsider the "manliness" of your quarterback. He is persuaded to dump his beautiful pregnant girlfriend, now wears burberry scarves and a Yankees hat whike carrying an ugly dog through the streets of NYC? Maybe the problem is Tom being a p*ssy and a pushover. Tom has an agent, a PR person and one supplied by the team. If he's using Will for that purpose then it's for a reason. Will's a good guy.

COMMENT:
I was really intrigued by this story so I looked into the businesses Mr McDonough was said to have started. CAVU, the website for Mr McDonough's supposed Talent Agency (with the logo that Mr O'Brien so salaciously compared to Nazi-Era Fascist styling) is a website for an environmental action group and his name appears nowhere on it. The acronym he ascribes to CAVU; Ceiling and Visibility Unlimited, is the motto of the 12th Air Force, 57th Bombardment Wing. The only link it has to Mr McDonough is that it shows up on a google search of "Mcdonough and CAVU." As an editorial staff member at a major magazine I fear that BOston Magazine may not have done their due diligence in researching Mr O'Brien's work.

Boston Magazine and a handful of the ignorant and envious DYING to chop Will down a peg or two. Nice job. Keep your face pressed to the glass. There's certainly more success due Will, and few more deserving.

This article is comical. The kid is a glorified administrative assistant. He doesn't make financial or professional decisions. You think that a company would invest millions of dollars on an athlete, then listen to his secretary about how he should be marketed? Seriously? He has no input on anything like that, he sifts through opportunities, tells Brady what to look at and that's about it. He has no experience in any type of real athlete marketing and zero experience in hedge funds. Needless to say, he won't last long in this role once no one other than Brady will invest with him. You're a professional athlete, or just a wealthy individual. Would you invest tens of millions of dollars with someone who did the laundry, picked up high chairs and drove girlfriends around for a professional quarterback? Sorry, the Brady gravy train will end, and it will end soon, then the 28 year old gofer is screwed.

COMMENT:
Don't call the guy a secretary, that's badmouthing an actual profession in which people work for a living. I also don't believe the article implied that Will McDonough makes Brady's decisions. Brady is a big boy capable of deciphering NFL defenses. I'm sure Brady is responsible for his own decisions. If McDonough really did have Bundchen lined-up, primed for a tabloid-scandalous mega-wattage relationship with Brady who was ready to dump his pregnant girlfriend, or if he was just advising Brady on the best ways to capitalize on his celebrity, Brady still was responsible for his own bottom line. Will McDonough may be a paid enabler or a PR lackey, either way, Brady is still in charge of his own decisions.

The principals in this drama are lightweights. None of them could survive in the fishbowl of LA or NY. If Will had true savvy he would have advised his "friend" Brady to lay low with his new lady love until the birth of his child. Instead, Brady hotfooted it around the globe with his Will-picked model and issued a tepid press release proclaiming "excitement" about the blessed event. IMO, these are two frat boys livin' the life--everyone else, including Brady's child, be damned.

Lord help Tom if he ever dumps Slick (Sick) Willy or Gisele! It seems pretty clear that Willy intended to match Gisele and Tom up, just a question of whether he was still with Bridget or not. Brady had affairs at private country clubs when he was with Bridget, so an affair with Gisele seems likely especially since it was reported earlier that they started dating in December 2006 and not January 2007. hat a shame. The truly humble, nice guy of 2002 has been replaced by a souless, lying, cheating, deadbeat dad. Good work Willy.
Will is just a glorified pimp for Brady

Page 3 of this article is disgusting. Will pimped out girls for Tom while he was dating Bridget and kept it quiet - he is lower than pond scum and Brady is right down there with him. Tom's as much a cheater as the team he plays for. Will arranged the Brady/Bundchen relationship because it was a 'shrewd marketing' move? Pathetic. I can't wait till his 'shrewd marketing' move breaks up. I'm sure this pariah doesn't give a sh*t about a pregnant woman and now a little boy who is not part of the marketing scheme of this 'megacouple'. Because of Will's orchestration - Tom Brady ignored and was cruel to the expectant mother of his child during her whole pregnancy. That is unforgivable. Tom was enabled by the superslut. Was this worth a Stetson cologne ad and a new watch? I hope that it all backfires and Tom Brady actually has to marry this nudie supermodel who was raised by the fashion industry from age 14. I will enjoy watching her take ownership of million dollar mansio

I have news for you... most of the players on the team in question cheat on their wives. I know this for a fact because I used to work for the team. We never addressed anyone as "Mrs." becuase we never knew if it was a wife or another woman. Guys are cheaters and dismiss a good woman for a slut- it happens all the time. About Brady's baby mama- don't you thinks he's to blame at all? She tricked him into pregnancy and caused this drama herself. This has blown up into a media circus and all three of them (gi, Brady and Bridget) benefited greatly. Let's leave Will out of this. He is Brady's friend and assistant and he hasn't hurt anyone. Brady made some questionable choices and should be held accountable.

I can't understand anyone defending Will McDonough after reading this article. He is a wannabe that will use people and their connections to get ahead. He sounds like a pathetic loser in this article. I agree with the statement that Brady made some questionable choices and should be held accountable. He deserves to be stuck with the supermodel - if he thinks he is her errand boy now, wait until after he marries her. She will definitely be wearing the pants in the relationship. Plus, she is one manly-faced woman - there is nothing attractive about her face. Can you imagine their kids - hope they are boys ... Thank goodness Jack has the last name Moynahan! because after Gislut has kids - she isn't going to want Jack around.

It has been obvious for years that this man is a sleazy, incompetent courtesan. Kudos to Boston magazine for exposing him. The only person in this sleazy melodrama to come out looking dignified and to be admired is Bridget Moynahan. The other 3 aren't fit to be in the same state with her. After what they did and tried to do to her is abominable. Yes, Will may have orchestrated, but Tom is the responsible one. What a poor excuse for a human being. May he have a miserable life.

I'm disappointed that so many people would judge a person on one article. Yes - you are right, Will leveraged his connections (if a person does not grow and utilize their personal network they have got no chance in business). Yes - you are right, Will is very lucky. Yes - you are right, Will found himself at the right place at the right time. However, with that said, people like Will make their own luck. Will makes the most of opportunities and works incredibly hard. People do not simply 'sleaze' their way up the ladder to the position that Will has. His relentless work ethic earned him his great success with Tom, the Patriots and beyond. Personally, my brief business relationship with Will has come and gone, but I will never forget his advice and I will never remember Will as anything but someone who is intelligent, genuine and thoughtful.
