He's with Tom

By Luke O'Brien

How it is that McDonough got his foot in the door takes us back to 1996. At 16, most boys were playing Mortal Kombat. McDonough was hustling. He wanted to work at the sports radio station WEEI, and legend has it he called every day asking for a job. But McDonough's former boss there, Lou Imbriano, has a different version of events: "His dad knew the CFO of our company."

It was the beginning of a familiar pattern: McDonough leveraging a connection to advance himself, then quickly making a positive impact. "There was no sense of entitlement," says Imbriano, now the head of TrinityOne marketing. "I'd ask him, 'What are you doing on Saturday?' and his answer was, 'What do you need me to do?'"

Imbriano recounts one episode during the Patriots' 1996 AFC championship game in Foxboro. McDonough was sent to the stadium parking lot, tasked with handing out large "Go Pats!" WEEI cards. But he was competing against the team's marketing crew, which was handing out pompoms in the same spot. "More of the cards were coming into the stadium than the pompoms," Imbriano says. "The next day I got a call giving me a little crap for it."

During his senior year at Westwood High, where he was class president, McDonough started a staffing company to keep up with Imbriano's demands for manpower at events. In short order, he had a sizable collection of classmates working for him. In 1997, Imbriano signed on as the Pats marketing director, and McDonough went with him. He also enrolled at BC, and started taking classes at the school of management. He worked for the Patriots two to three days a week, gaining experience in sales, community relations, and a host of other marketing subgenres.

When he graduated in 2002, McDonough was given a full-time job in the Patriots front office. Imbriano soon appointed McDonough a player liaison for his marketing group. Now anyone looking for a Patriot to show up at an event went through him. In his new position, McDonough had ample time to pal around with the team. He was roughly the same age as many of the players. He knew the city and liked to go out. But it was Brady, in particular, with whom he connected. The quarterback saw a kindred spirit in McDonough and began seeking him out for advice, not just about team issues, but about Boston, about life.

Was it at this point that McDonough started wearing suits in the locker room? Or driving a BMW 540i? (A Cadillac Escalade, Lexus SUV, and Range Rover would follow.) By 2004, an increasing amount of McDonough's time was spent dealing with Brady, whose sisters were still handling much of his schedule. But the quarterback had started dating Moynahan. He was a two-time Super Bowl MVP etching his name into the NFL record books. His expanding celebrity demanded a professional-grade filter. McDonough—a friend, a Pats insider, not a sister—was the ideal guy for the job.

Sure enough, Brady's "butler" was soon everywhere, behaving very little like a butler. People were confused about his position. Was he an agent? An assistant? A bunco man?

"He was always talking about making deals," says McDonough's friend Roy MacDowell III, a real estate developer with the firm Boulder Capital. There was McDonough partying with members of the team at Union Bar & Grille. There he was flying with Brady to Lindsay Lohan's New Year's bash. There he was shooting bull at Sonsie with new BC football coach Jeff Jagodzinski and Robert Withers, an executive at Marquis Jet, a private airline Brady uses. (Neither Jagodzinski nor Withers responded to interview requests.) The people at Sonsie say McDonough became such a regular at the swish establishment and entertained so many heavy hitters there that the owners decided to name a drink after him. It's called the Will Thrill. Ingredients: Stoli orange vodka, Citrónge, and orange juice topped with sparkling wine.

If one moment stands out in McDonough's upward scramble during this period, it occurred during a home game against the Jets on December 4, 2005. Gisele Bündchen was at Foxboro that day, handing out Victoria's Secret prizes and steaming up the end-zone JumboTrons. McDonough knew her from a past promotional project and had surely noted what she'd told the Inside Track after seeing a photo of Brady: "definitely not too shabby." Here was an opportunity for a very sweet deal.

About a year later, on January 14, 2007, mere weeks after Brady formally dumped a pregnant Moynahan, McDonough was spotted with Bündchen in the bowels of San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium after the Patriots' playoff win over the Chargers. Bündchen would later tell GQ that "a friend who knew us both" had fixed her up with Brady. A source close to Brady confirms it was McDonough. "Will would smuggle [Bündchen] in," claims a friend of Brady's. "Tom was on his way out with Bridget. He can't see Gisele Bündchen without people noticing." A different friend says Brady had ended things with Moynahan several months earlier. And that Brady hadn't even been on an actual date with Bündchen when she was spotted outside the locker room in San Diego.

No matter. The paparazzi and gossip queens began foaming. In the press, the star athlete and the supermodel were an instant item. In the blogosphere, McDonough was a "pimp," accused of abetting Brady's supposed playboy lifestyle by planning dates with a bevy of women and keeping it quiet so Moynahan wouldn't find out. Another view might be that he was simply doing his job—what better way for an aide-de-camp to demonstrate his value than to gift-wrap the world's hottest supermodel? It was also a shrewd marketing move: Brady and Bündchen have become one of those megacouples whose conjoined fame is greater than the sum of its parts.

By last year McDonough had cemented his place in Brady's retinue. He had moved into a Commonwealth Avenue penthouse a few doors down from the quarterback's pad. He started showing up in photographs wearing designer outfits similar to Brady's. He seemed to develop a Brady "mode" that was different from the laid-back persona his friends remember. People who have dealt with McDonough in a professional setting say he can sometimes be confident to the point of being cocky. On the field, that's called swagger. Off the field, it's attitude.

A magazine staffer who worked on a Brady photo shoot last year says McDonough stalked onto the set wearing a navy pinstripe suit and a BlackBerry on his belt and proceeded to behave like a discount David Falk. "He seemed like a cheesy L.A. agent," the staffer says. "Any time Brady would come out in a different look, [McDonough] would be like, 'Yeah, man, totally,' or, 'No, don't wear that.' It was never even clear what his role was or if we could tell him to butt out. He just seemed to have opinions on everything. It was escalating into diva-ish behavior."

Brady said little during the photo shoot; McDonough did most of the talking. "[He] was a little bit drunk with his power," the staffer says. "He really seemed like a kid in a suit with a lot of gumption."

What Tom Brady doesn't realize, when this relationship with Will goes south - to recapture fame and make money, McDonough will spill his guts on Tom and write a tell-all.

Agree with all previous comments and adding if this losers job is to build a marketing image for Deadbeat Dad he has no idea what he's doing. I have known Will for many years. He is, in fact, a great business person and very driven. He is so friendly, respectful, hard-working and most importantly- a good friend. The words spoken about him are unfair and written by people who don't know him. I wish that people would share their feelings with Will and not in a magazine chat room.

In a really fascinating article and very well written piece, Brady's E, Will McDonough, is credited with the quarterback's rise from awkward media interviewee to a stylish, model-dating, European-vacationing metrosexual. Depending on your particular persuasion this either makes McDonough the anti-christ or Jesus. Meet Tom Brady's one man entourage, a 28 year old guy who joined the Patriots in 1997 as an intern and now takes care of everything Brady. Including introducing him to Gisele. click here

Will McDonough, businessman? From dressing his "friend" in designer clothes to teaching him how to walk the walk (even though not in stilettos on a streetcorner), Will McDonough's business acumen has been around for centuries, this is just a modern twist. Every media whore needs his pimp, Brady is not much different...just more, erm, financially productive.

Then maybe you need to reconsider the "manliness" of your quarterback. He is persuaded to dump his beautiful pregnant girlfriend, now wears burberry scarves and a Yankees hat whike carrying an ugly dog through the streets of NYC? Maybe the problem is Tom being a p*ssy and a pushover. Tom has an agent, a PR person and one supplied by the team. If he's using Will for that purpose then it's for a reason. Will's a good guy.

I was really intrigued by this story so I looked into the businesses Mr McDonough was said to have started. CAVU, the website for Mr McDonough's supposed Talent Agency (with the logo that Mr O'Brien so salaciously compared to Nazi-Era Fascist styling) is a website for an environmental action group and his name appears nowhere on it. The acronym he ascribes to CAVU; Ceiling and Visibility Unlimited, is the motto of the 12th Air Force, 57th Bombardment Wing. The only link it has to Mr McDonough is that it shows up on a google search of "Mcdonough and CAVU." As an editorial staff member at a major magazine I fear that BOston Magazine may not have done their due diligence in researching Mr O'Brien's work.

This article is comical. The kid is a glorified administrative assistant. He doesn't make financial or professional decisions. You think that a company would invest millions of dollars on an athlete, then listen to his secretary about how he should be marketed? Seriously? He has no input on anything like that, he sifts through opportunities, tells Brady what to look at and that's about it. He has no experience in any type of real athlete marketing and zero experience in hedge funds. Needless to say, he won't last long in this role once no one other than Brady will invest with him. You're a professional athlete, or just a wealthy individual. Would you invest tens of millions of dollars with someone who did the laundry, picked up high chairs and drove girlfriends around for a professional quarterback? Sorry, the Brady gravy train will end, and it will end soon, then the 28 year old gofer is screwed.

COMMENT:
Don't call the guy a secretary, that's badmouthing an actual profession in which people work for a living. I also don't believe the article implied that Will McDonough makes Brady's decisions. Brady is a big boy capable of deciphering NFL defenses. I'm sure Brady is responsible for his own decisions. If McDonough really did have Bundchen lined-up, primed for a tabloid-scandalous mega-wattage relationship with Brady who was ready to dump his pregnant girlfriend, or if he was just advising Brady on the best ways to capitalize on his celebrity, Brady still was responsible for his own bottom line. Will McDonough may be a paid enabler or a PR lackey, either way, Brady is still in charge of his own decisions.

The principals in this drama are lightweights. None of them could survive in the fishbowl of LA or NY. If Will had true savvy he would have advised his "friend" Brady to lay low with his new lady love until the birth of his child. Instead, Brady hotfooted it around the globe with his Will-picked model and issued a tepid press release proclaiming "excitement" about the blessed event. IMO, these are two frat boys livin' the life--everyone else, including Brady's child, be damned.

COMMENT:
Lord help Tom if he ever dumps Slick (Sick) Willy or Gisele! It seems pretty clear that Willy intended to match Gisele and Tom up, just a question of whether he was still with Bridget or not. Brady had affairs at private country clubs when he was with Bridget, so an affair with Gisele seems likely especially since it was reported earlier that they started dating in December 2006 and not January 2007. hat a shame. The truly humble, nice guy of 2002 has been replaced by a souless, lying, cheating, deadbeat dad. Good work Willy.

Page 3 of this article is disgusting. Will pimped out girls for Tom while he was dating Bridget and kept it quiet - he is lower than pond scum and Brady is right down there with him. Tom's as much a cheater as the team he plays for. Will arranged the Brady/Bundchen relationship because it was a 'shrewd marketing' move? Pathetic. I can't wait till his 'shrewd marketing' move breaks up. I'm sure this pariah doesn't give a sh*t about a pregnant woman and now a little boy who is not part of the marketing scheme of this 'megacouple'. Because of Will's orchestration - Tom Brady ignored and was cruel to the expectant mother of his child during her whole pregnancy. That is unforgivable. Tom was enabled by the superslut. Was this worth a Stetson cologne ad and a new watch? I hope that it all backfires and Tom Brady actually has to marry this nudie supermodel who was raised by the fashion industry from age 14. I will enjoy watching her take ownership of million dollar mansio

I have news for you... most of the players on the team in question cheat on their wives. I know this for a fact because I used to work for the team. We never addressed anyone as "Mrs." becuase we never knew if it was a wife or another woman. Guys are cheaters and dismiss a good woman for a slut- it happens all the time. About Brady's baby mama- don't you thinks he's to blame at all? She tricked him into pregnancy and caused this drama herself. This has blown up into a media circus and all three of them (gi, Brady and Bridget) benefited greatly. Let's leave Will out of this. He is Brady's friend and assistant and he hasn't hurt anyone. Brady made some questionable choices and should be held accountable.

I can't understand anyone defending Will McDonough after reading this article. He is a wannabe that will use people and their connections to get ahead. He sounds like a pathetic loser in this article. I agree with the statement that Brady made some questionable choices and should be held accountable. He deserves to be stuck with the supermodel - if he thinks he is her errand boy now, wait until after he marries her. She will definitely be wearing the pants in the relationship. Plus, she is one manly-faced woman - there is nothing attractive about her face. Can you imagine their kids - hope they are boys ... Thank goodness Jack has the last name Moynahan! because after Gislut has kids - she isn't going to want Jack around.

It has been obvious for years that this man is a sleazy, incompetent courtesan. Kudos to Boston magazine for exposing him. The only person in this sleazy melodrama to come out looking dignified and to be admired is Bridget Moynahan. The other 3 aren't fit to be in the same state with her. After what they did and tried to do to her is abominable. Yes, Will may have orchestrated, but Tom is the responsible one. What a poor excuse for a human being. May he have a miserable life.

I'm disappointed that so many people would judge a person on one article. Yes - you are right, Will leveraged his connections (if a person does not grow and utilize their personal network they have got no chance in business). Yes - you are right, Will is very lucky. Yes - you are right, Will found himself at the right place at the right time. However, with that said, people like Will make their own luck. Will makes the most of opportunities and works incredibly hard. People do not simply 'sleaze' their way up the ladder to the position that Will has. His relentless work ethic earned him his great success with Tom, the Patriots and beyond. Personally, my brief business relationship with Will has come and gone, but I will never forget his advice and I will never remember Will as anything but someone who is intelligent, genuine and thoughtful.
