Person of Interest: Heather Mitts

Franchise kick-starter, Boston Breakers

April 2009

The Boston Breakers women's soccer team is back (first home game is 4/11), without some of the liabilities that limited its appeal prior to its folding in 2003. Then, home matches sometimes conflicted with Revolution games, and were played at BU's Nickerson Field (ever try parallel-parking a minivan on Comm. Ave.?). Now, returning as part of the new Women's Professional Soccer league, the Breakers will play at Harvard Stadium (ample parking available) and Revs overlap will be a thing of the past.

That'll help, but not as much as star defender Heather Mitts, a draw for soccer-crazy girls—and their brothers. A two-time Olympic gold medalist, the 30-year-old was voted Sexiest Female Athlete on ESPN.com and has done spreads for Maxim and FHM. Mitts says whatever boosts the sport's popularity is good, so long as it's "tasteful and athletic." For better or worse, that will make Breakers redux much harder to ignore.
