Small Scale

Built for little ones, these furniture lines are all grown up.

By Rachel Levitt

Changing Shape: Hipster nurseries sport pieces like this birch-faced plywood, six-drawer cabinet with tray top (for diaper changing) by Los Angeles-based Not Neutral. It has one brightly colored drawer (choose from green, blue, or orange) and takes its design cues from the simplicity of the Dutch de Stijl movement. Tetra 3:6 changing table, $2,200, Chulamama, 320 Derby St., Salem, 888-424-8526, chulamama.com.

Play Station: Jenny Argie and Andrew Thornton, an artist and architect respectively, are the designers behind this play table. It has small drawers to stash rocks, stickers, and markers, plus two big spaces for everything else. Their products are kid-tested and made of sustainably harvested woods. Argington Fundy Play Table, $399, Wild Child, 397 Massachusetts Ave., Arlington, 781-483-3566, wildchildgear.com.

Soft Step: After moving from Cambridge to Morocco in 2003, Julie Klear and Moulay Essakalli founded Zid Zid Kids (which translates to Let’s go, kids) to make African-inspired objects. Their joyful, handmade pieces are often constructed of recycled materials. Lounge Pouf, $239, Bliss Home, 121 Newbury St., Boston, 617-421-5544, blisshome.com.
