Eight Must-See Arts Events in August

Million-Dollar Baby
Lexington-bred art-rock diva Amanda Palmer and her Grand Theft Orchestra stage a two-night stand at the Middle East in Cambridge.
7/31, 8/2

Sea-Worthy
Salem trades the broomstick for the rudder when its Maritime Festival kicks off this month at the Historic Derby Wharf, and the Antique and Classic Boat Festival comes to Brewer Hawthorne Cove Marina.
8/3–8/4 (Wharf); 8/25–8/26 (Marina)

Three-Ring Pop
In an acrobatic homage to the late pop icon, Cirque du Soleil brings its Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour to the TD Garden. Count on it to be either as awesome as the moonwalk in “Billie Jean,” or just awesomely cheesy.
8/3–8/4

Born to Home Run
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band continue the welcome tradition of great concerts at the home fields of the Sox and Pats.
8/14–8/15 (Fenway Park); 8/18 (Gillette Stadium)

Belter’s Paradise
Thanks to her seminal band, Throwing Muses, and her incandescent solo career, Kristin Hersh is a Boston legend. With a soaring voice and searing lyrics, she can out-emote Adele, meaning she’ll blow the doors off Club Passim.
8/19–8/20

The Best Offense
It’ll be nostalgic for some, horrifying for others when notoriously politically incorrect comedian Andrew “Dice” Clay tapes a comedy special for Showtime at the Wilbur Theatre.
8/24

Islands in the Street
Feathers and sequins abound in the most astonishing parade of costumes this far north of Trinidad. Participants in the Boston Carnival march to a soca beat from MLK Boulevard in Roxbury to the Franklin Park Zoo.
8/25

What Price Beauty?
Video artist Ori Gersht made a splash in April when his work was broadcast in Times Square, and now at the MFA he’s getting his first-ever career showcase. In “History Repeating,” Gersht concentrates on the nexus of beauty and trauma.
8/28–1/6/2013
