Culture Calendar: Five Must-See Arts and Entertainment Events in June

FORGET CLAPTON

The British jazz-rock guitarist John McLaughlin has been wielding a mighty ax since the ’60s and ’70s, when he seared his way through Miles Davis albums and founded the legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra. As inventive as Hendrix, as lyrical as Segovia, and way faster than Eddie Van Halen, he makes a rare Boston appearance with his current band, 4th Dimension, at Scullers. 6/22

DREAD OF THE CHARLES

The Boston Dragon Boat Festival features dance, music, and martial-arts performances, as well as Asian food and arts and crafts. That’s in addition to the races, of course. 6/8–6/9

TRIPPIN’ IN TANGLEWOOD

Expect classic tunes, soaring arrangements, and one very hazy vibe when the Boston Pops perform a Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration at the Koussevitzky Music Shed with the Allman Brothers and Gov’t Mule singer-guitarist Warren Haynes. 6/22

TSAR STAR

The House of Fabergé was the preferred jeweler of Russian royalty in the late-19th and 20th centuries. This month, the Peabody Essex Museum unveils its collection of 230 sparkling Fabergé items, including enameled clocks, detailed carvings, and the iconic golden eggs. 6/22–9/29

SALTWATER CELLULOID

The Nantucket Film Festival returns with a stellar lineup of documentaries and international films. There are indies featuring the likes of Casey Affleck and Kristen Wiig, as well as Pixar’s new Monsters University. Director David O. Russell (The Fighter) and the Oscar-winning documentarian Barbara Kopple (Harlan County USA) are among this year’s special honorees. 6/26–6/30
