Bhangra is the soundtrack to a diaspora. While its roots are firmly entrenched in Punjabi folk traditions, it has since cross-pollinated with British rock ’n’ roll, Jamaican reggae, and American hip-hop, and today it’s a fundamentally international dance phenomenon. Here in Massachusetts, Boston Bhangra has been promoting both the modern and the traditional versions since 2000, with performances around the city (you might have caught them at this summer’s Outside the Box festival). But the organization is best known for its annual Boston Bhangra Competition. Now in its 10th year, the contest showcases the best bhangra dancers from all over the country at the Orpheum. Expect vibrant costumes, addictive music, and thrilling moves. And if you like what you see, you might want to stop by Boston Bhangra’s weekly open dance classes in Brookline. 11/16
