Will You Join Mark Zuckerberg’s Book Club?

The Facebook founder resolved to read a book every other week this year—and invites you to do the same.

Following in Her Majesty Oprah Winfrey’s footsteps, King Mark Zuckerberg of Palo Alto, California, just launched the next big book club.

The Facebook founder and CEO shared on his page Friday that his New Year’s resolution is to read more—one book every other week, to be precise, a goal probably less daunting than his previous resolution to learn Mandarin (which he did).

Zuckerberg wrote:

I’m excited for my reading challenge. I’ve found reading books very intellectually fulfilling. Books allow you to fully explore a topic and immerse yourself in a deeper way than most media today. I’m looking forward to shifting more of my media diet towards reading books.

The book selections for “A Year of Books” will focus on different cultures, beliefs, histories, and technologies. Readers are encouraged to take part in discussions on the Year of Books Facebook page, where moderators will keep conversations on track.

The first read will be The End of Power by Moisés Naím.

“It’s a book that explores how the world is shifting to give individual people more power that was traditionally only held by large governments, militaries, and other organizations,” Zuckerberg wrote. “The trend towards giving people more power is one I believe in deeply, and I’m looking forward to reading this book and exploring this in more detail.”

No doubt the folks at Basic Books, which published The End of Power in 2013, are jumping up and down with glee. The book went out of stock on Amazon over the weekend.

And no doubt publishers around the country are now eagerly waiting to find out if one of their books will be bestowed the honor of inclusion in Mark Zuckerberg’s book club, because if Oprah’s Book Club taught us anything, it’s that a celebrity endorsement pays off.
