In an effort to create a direct relationship between local contemporary artists and its young visitors and families, the Boston Children’s Museum has announced the creation of an artist-in-residence program, called “Current.”

The program will invite one artist a year to take over a studio space in the museum for a few months and design a site-specific installation, as well as related programming and learning experiences for children and families.

“Art is a major component of Boston Children’s Museum experience and making our space available to the artist community provides exposure for local artists and fosters the conversation around the power of art and the creative process,” said the museum’s arts program manager Alice Vogler in a press release.

The artist-in-residence program was established in partnership with Alter Projects, a local initiative that offers custom arts programming and consultation for artists, organizations, and enterprises. Its founders, Maggie Cavallo and Leonie Bradbury, will continue to work with museum staff and inaugural artist-in-residence Eve L. Ewing on her project.

Ewing is a local artist, writer, and doctoral candidate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her installation, “A Map Home,” will explore themes of place, childhood exploration, and connecting text and images to make meaning in everyday life. It also draws visual inspiration from street-level images of Chicago, where Ewing was formerly a public school teacher.

“A Map Home” will be on view from December 23 through March 13, 2016. The museum will host an opening reception on January 15, and Ewing will lead drop-in gallery activities on January 18 and February 16.
