Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist Joins Boston Marathon Bombing Film Patriots Day

The production has also found an actor to play MIT police officer Sean Collier.

Supergirl actress Melissa Benoist and two others have joined the cast of Patriots Day.

Benoist will play Katherine Russell, the wife of Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev, in the film, which is being produced by and stars Mark Wahlberg.

The project, has also cast actor Jake Picking as MIT police officer Sean Collier, who was shot and killed by the Tsarnaev brothers while on duty following the attack.

Emmy-nominated Scandal star Khandi Alexander has joined Patriots Day as well and will play a law enforcement interrogator.

The latest casting news comes after it was announced that Red Sox slugger David Ortiz would be making a cameo in the film. The soon-to-be retired star will be re-enacting his famous “this is our f–king city” speech, which he gave at Fenway Park.

Patriots Day has been filming around Boston for several weeks. Wahlberg, who plays a composite character based on Boston police officers, recently filmed a scene at the finish line of the 2016 Boston Marathon.

The rest of the cast includes Academy Award-winner J.K. Simmons, Golden Globe-winner John Goodman, Golden Globe-winner Kevin Bacon, Golden Globe-nominee Michelle Monaghan, Emmy-nominee Rachel Brosnahan, Michael Beach, Jimmy O. Yang, Vincent Curatola, Alex Wolff, James Colby, Themo Melikidze, and Christopher O’Shea.

Directed by Peter Berg and co-financed by CBS Films and Lionsgate, Patriots Day hits theaters in Boston on December 21.
