Psy’s New ‘Gentleman’ Dance Is Easy Enough
But it's no Gangnam Style.
The music video for Psy’s new single, “Gentleman,” already has more than 60 million views and counting after its premiere on Saturday. The singer’s popularity skyrocketed last year after the release of “Gangnam Style,” which took longer to reach 50 million (about five weeks) but grew exponentially thereafter to become the first YouTube video with 1 billion hits. (In April, “Gangnam Style” surpassed the 1.5 billion-view mark.)
Like “Gangnam Style,” “Gentleman” comes with a brand-new dance from the Korean pop star, but it’s not nearly as unique as its predecessor. While Gangnam Style required some endurance—hopping up and down from side to side and swinging your arm in the air like a cowboy swinging a lasso—here’s how to dance Gentleman style:
1. Find some drop-crotch pants.
2. Plant your feet shoulder-width apart.
3. Swing your hips from side to side, thrusting them forward each time.
4. Once in a while, raise your hands and snap your fingers to the beat.
5. Also once in a while, scratch your butt and then stick your fingers in the face of a pretty girl in the library. In other words, be a gentleman.
Here’s a step-by-step photo guide on how to do it, even though you really don’t need it.
Hard to tell if “Gentleman” will reach the viral status of “Gangnam Style.” The latter became a phenomenon because of the dance, not the music and lyrics, much in the vein of the Dougie and Harlem Shake. All of these were just hard enough dance-wise to not scare people off, and each challenged YouTuber viewers to put their own creative spin on them.
Gentleman style might just be too easy of a dance to go superviral. And since the gimmicks all involve being lewd and rude to women (all in good fun, of course), well, we’ll have to wait and see whether or not Ellen approves.
