Ben Affleck Collaborates with TOMS on Charitable Shoe Line to Support the Eastern Congo Initiative
Ben goes from director extraordinaire to shoe designer.
Do-gooder Ben Affleck is back at it again.
Just a few weeks ago, we reported that the actor/director pledged to live on $1.50 a day for ‘Live Below the Line’, a campaign fighting against extreme poverty. Now Affleck is working with the popular shoe brand TOMS to create a limited-edition shoe line to benefit the Eastern Congo Initiative.
In 2010, Affleck established Eastern Congo Initiative, “the first U.S.-based advocacy and grant-making initiative wholly focused on working with and for the people of eastern Congo.” ECI provides developmental aid for community-building in the African country.
“It’s a limited-edition with a wide appeal,” TOMS says of the new shoe line on their website. The line has three pairs of shoes made from Congolese textiles: one slip-on style for women, and a high-top and a slip-on for men. TOMS also provides a descriptive account of their collaboration with Affleck and ECI:
Introducing our first product collaboration with ECI: a limited-edition collection of shoes with a special significance. These pairs feature designs inspired by Congolese textiles, with two styles for men and one for women. $5 from each pair helps fund ECI’s programs for youth and families in the region, and a child in need will receive a new pair of shoes.
ECI has been one of TOMS Shoe Giving Partners since October 2012, providing TOMS Shoes as part of ECI’s programs to help children and their communities.” According to TOMS’s One for One mission statement, for every TOMS product purchased, the brand distributes a new pair of shoes for children in need.
So from living off $1.50 a day, to providing shoes and care to Congolese, what should we expect next from Superman Affleck? Well, one kick-ass Saturday Night Live finale this weekend, that’s for sure…
