Five Reasons to Leave the House This Weekend
“Hippie Chic” at the MFA, “Arrested Development” trivia, a special “Boston Strong” edition of the National Sand Sculpting Festival, and more.
“Hippie Chic” at the MFA
Things are getting groovy at the MFA. The museum is bringing the “Summer of Love” to present-day Boston with “Hippie Chic,” an exhibit celebrating fashion from the late 1960s and early 1970s. The show features about 50 ensembles—tie-dyed silk and velvet pantsuits, printed jackets, patchwork dresses—worn by mannequins fully accessorized with vintage scarves, boots, and even wigs designed by Boston Ballet hair and makeup artist Jason Allen. And it’s not just an experience for your eyes—the gallery itself will be fully decorated with shag rugs, spinning lights, rotating platforms, and a vintage jukebox loaded with hits by the likes of The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and The Doors.
Included with regular museum admission, July 16 to November 11, Museum of Fine Arts, 465 Huntington Ave., 617-267-9300, mfa.org

This year’s festival will have a special twist—a centerpiece “Boston Strong” sculpture paying tribute to those affected by the Boston Marathon attacks. You can make an entire day—or weekend—out of it, with gourmet food trucks, children’s activities, and fireworks.
