Free Boston Ballet Show ‘Night of Stars’ on Saturday at Boston Common
A chance to see some of the country's best ballet for free? We're in.
Whoever said ballet is passé can eat their words and grand jeté on outta here, because in recent years, ballet has reclaimed a place in the mainstream and rebranded itself as the coolest O.G. of dance forms. The reality show Breaking Pointe concluded its second season on the CW last week, and more and more on FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance (just renewed for season 11), you’ll see ballet veterans competing against hip-hop dancers.
Unconvinced that ballet is cool? Don’t knock it ’til you try it. This Saturday, to give Boston residents a preview of their 2013-2014 season, the Boston Ballet will perform a free show (live orchestra and massive stage included) called “Night of Stars” at Boston Common. That’s right: this show is FREE.
And because they are the Boston Ballet, you can rest assured that whatever performance you are given will be worthy of top marks. Celebrating its 50th year, the company has recently wowed audiences with fresh new shows like “Chroma,” while still offering age-old favorites like “The Sleeping Beauty” and “The Nutcracker.”
Saturday’s free show on the Common promises a diverse set ranging from classical to contemporary. The Boston Ballet is also teasing a special world premiere piece.
So really, what excuse do you have not to attend? Experience the ballet in the open air, and then decide if tutus and arabesques are for you.
“Night of Stars” is free and will take place this Saturday, September 21, at 7 p.m. on Boston Common. Rain date: Sunday, September 22, at 7 p.m. For more info, visit bostonballet.org.
