Check Out Mindy Kaling’s ‘Badly Drawn Girl’ Comics from Her Time at Dartmouth College [Updated]

Before Kelly Kapoor, there was Badly Drawn Girl, a badly drawn girl living it up at Dartmouth.

We’ve always known Cambridge native Mindy Kaling had comedy chops, but it turns out her special brand of sassy girl wit already existed in full force during her college days at Dartmouth.

Before Mindy Lahiri on The Mindy Project, before Kelly Kapoor on The Office, and even before she played Ben Affleck in a play she co-wrote titled Matt & Ben, there was “Badly Drawn Girl,” a comic strip by Mindy Chokalingam, Darmouth class of 2001. In college, Kaling studied playwriting, worked on the newspaper (called The Dartmouth, in which the “Badly Drawn Girl” comic was published), was part of the a cappella group The Rockapellas, and interned on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Prior to her Dartmouth days, she went to high school Buckingham Browne & Nichols (class of 1997, for those of you rushing to grab your yearbook).

A close reading of “Badly Drawn Girl” reveals what we already knew: that Mindy Kaling clearly sees the comedy in being a not-taken, not-size-2, not-popular, and all-around perfectly normal human being. It is insightful. It is cute. And it is happy with a side of FML—just the way we like our Kaling comedies.
