New Movies to Film in Boston This Year: Grey Lady, Fat Ballerina / Prima, and The Secret in Their Eyes
Keep your eyes out for Gwyneth Paltrow, Vera Farmiga, Eric Dane, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
As if Johnny Depp galavanting around town dressed at Whitey Bulger isn’t enough, now Boston has three more major movies scheduled to set up camp around town this year. In fact, one has already started.
New Hampshire native John Shea is directing a film he wrote called Grey Lady in South Boston and on Nantucket. The film, an indie thriller, stars Natalie Zea as a vulnerable aspiring artist who’s targeted by killers seeking vengeance on a Boston detective. Eric Dane, also known as Dr. “McSteamy” from Grey’s Anatomy, stars as the detective. Dane appears on the cover of Nantucket’s June issue of N magazine. “It’s amazing that they actually let us film on this island—it’s so beautiful,” Dane says in the feature. “It’s also amazing that other films haven’t been shot here, but I think that’s a testament to this town and how they want to conserve the beauty of this place.”
While some folks spotted the production shooting in Southie last week, Nantucket Today reporter Marianne Stanton caught a glimpse of Eric Dane on the set:

In addition, Departed star Vera Farmiga is reportedly coming back to Boston after filming The Judge with Robert Downey Jr. last summer. She will shoot a new movie currently going by Fat Ballerina or Prima. The film follows a mother who is “struggling to acclimate to her posh stomping grounds” after her daughter is accepted into a prestigious school for dancers. Fat Ballerina / Prima will film in Massachusetts this summer, but details on specific locations and dates have yet to be released.
And finally, GOOP Queen Gwyneth Paltrow may make her way to the Bay State this fall alongside 12 Years a Slave star Chiwetel Ejiofor. The two will star in The Secret in Their Eyes by Oscar-nominated writer Billy Ray (Captain Phillips and The Hunger Games). According to Deadline, Ejiofor will play a former MI-5 agent who returns to Boston on a joint task force with the FBI and is haunted by an unsolved murder. The Secret in Their Eyes is adapted from Juan José Campanella’s 2009 Foreign Language Film Oscar winner, El Secreto de Sus Ojos.
