After-School Special
Two years after scandal rocked Milton Academy, two alums pen an exposé—and brace for the backlash.
By Jason Feifer
The student handbook at Milton Academy spells out a laundry list of forbiddances: no wild parties, no cheating, no drugs—that sort of thing. But it’s the most sweeping prohibition—the one against tarnishing the institution—that Abigail Jones and Marissa Miley would have to contend with if they were still students at the image-conscious school.
Their new book, Restless Virgins, out this month, is a nonfiction portrait of youth gone wild, occasioned by the 2005 expulsion of five Milton hockey players for receiving oral sex from an underage female student in a locker room. The first-time authors chronicle the experiences of seven anonymous Milton kids, revealing a bawdy world of casual sex that suggests the headline-grabbing escapade was no isolated incident.
Restless Virgins is sure to bring the school grief—much to the chagrin of Jones and Miley, who say they take no pleasure in exposing their alma mater, and argue permissive sexual attitudes aren’t unique to Milton. “We just wanted to open up a conversation,” says Jones, class of ’99. Here’s betting they’ve accomplished that.
