Unhappy Reunion

In a new film, the Pixies are a band on the verge of a breakup—again.

Born in a UMass dorm, the Pixies inspired the grunge-rock boom of the early ’90s but famously broke up before getting a chance to actually enjoy it. When they got back together in 2004 for a reunion tour, cameras were rolling. The new documentary loudQUIETloud—named for the unmistakable structure of the Pixies’ songs—offers an insider’s view of a band that’s good at making music, not so good at coexisting. Bassist Kim Deal rides in a separate RV; drummer David Lovering won’t deign to pull his headphones out of his ears. All the acrimony makes for a good movie—and the soundtrack kicks ass.
