MVP

By John Gonzalez

There could be debate over whether this debut is a smart commentary on society going too far with its hero worship, or whether it’s just another ripped-from-the-headlines tale. But there will be no arguing over the quality of the writing. To tell the “fictional” story of a basketball prodigy who skips college, wins pro titles, seems perfect to the public, and is eventually exposed as deeply flawed after he rapes a hotel worker (sound familiar?), the Somerville author masterfully employs a style all his own.
