The Emperor's Children

By Elise Comtois

Somerville’s Messud opens a window into the world of three college buddies from Brown turning 30. The trio is struggling to make something of themselves—one as a television producer, one as a freelance critic, and the other as an aspiring author working in the shadow of a successful journalist father. Through deft social satire, Messud cleverly questions the meaning of love and success, while using her characters to show that the truth can be painful.
