Profile
For over 15 years, this Central Square hangout has been giving aspiring musicians their shot at fame (or, at least, a moderate degree of name recognition). Monday is the big night, with high-quality sound and sets that range from blues to folk to a cappella. Presiding over all is host Geoff Bartley, a benevolent presence who keeps the tempo from dragging.

I went to this open mic and got there early about 7:15pm to get a good spot. This effort was squashed when I saw The Host take the little pieces of paper which the musicians write their names on and organize them where he wanted them to be on the evenings schedule. Much to my disapointment this open mic is not a first come first serve affair. The Host puts his friends in the best spots and everyone else gets thrown a buscuit. I went at another time and as you can guess The Host's friends were scheduled at about the same time which is when it's most crowded. And when was I scheduled in for arriving at 7:15pm? It was 12:30pm. I think an over 5 hour wait to play 2 songs is a bit of a long wait don't you think. My search continues for an enjoyable open mic with a fair Host of ceremonies. My suggestion to other musicians is to go to the Cantab lounge when they do the Blues Jams with Host Candido. He's a great guitar player who gets my thumbs up for a Host.
