Natural Selection

By Kate Grip Denon

If organic is good enough for your fruit and your cleanser, why not your furniture? At Furnature in Watertown, you can find all-natural pieces for any room in the house—sofas, ottomans, mattresses—and have them custom-made.

Here, chemical-free definitely doesn’t mean style-free. Pieces bear only safe (made without chemicals, dyes or polymers) finishes or stains, and are padded with handpicked organic cotton batting, but the styles are hip and contemporary.

“Our mattresses are made of a natural rubber similar to latex without the additives,” says Barry Shapiro, co-founder of Furnature, along with his second cousin, Fred. “It completely molds to your body.”

The Shapiros specialized in custom upholstered furniture until a friend challenged them to develop a chemical-free sofa. Now their 1,000-square-foot showroom and a bustling online business serve customers throughout the United States. Talk about natural evolution.
