The Week That Was

Chronicling the past week via quick links and pithy commentary (we’re on summer hours edition).

Maria Menounous on the Obama family interview: She tells us how it all went down.

The Celtics kept the party going: And we were there.

This Internet thing could be huge! Michael Felger tells us why he forsake the Herald and ESPN 890 for WEEI.

It’s the one time Gisele Bundchen made us recoil in horror: Thanks, but we’ll skip the acid-wash butt-bearing cutoffs.

The Hill and the Hall Week in Review

1216401693Each Friday, Paul McMorrow will take you inside the smoke-filled rooms and darkly-lit corridors of government to bring you the hottest and juiciest political tidbits. This week: A rash of bills on the Hall, but who cares because it’s open season on Jim Marzilli; Tim Cahill has us thinking like it’s 1978; and somebody’s been raising some cash while we’ve been away.

The legislature rushed towards the end of its session this week, racing to take action on a number of bills that had fallen prey to the body’s famously inattentive attention span. There was action on nursing, gay nuptials, health care and same-day voter registration. The Hill also witnessed shameful scandal and naked political ambition. And, thanks to the latter two, we don’t have to pretend to be trying to wrap our skulls around any of that policy stuff. Read the rest of this entry »

Tonight
One of these things is not like the other, but somebody thought 311 and Snoop Dogg belong on the same bill.

Preview fall fashions and pick up some summer duds on sale at Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale.

Love Barbara Lynch’s food? Now you can meet the James Beard Award-winning chef at the ICA’s Talking Taste series.

We love al fresco dining, especially when we can duck inside for an equally beautiful view when it gets too hot. The MFA’s Summer Fridays series kicks off tonight.

Movie Metaphors for the Turnpike Mess

1216395699In today’s Globe, budget watchdog Michael Widmer likened the Patrick administration’s plan to cosign the Turnpike Authority’s loans to a chick flick.

“This is one of the most irresponsible proposals I have seen seriously considered by the Legislature in my 16 years,” said Widmer[.] “We are just heading off a cliff, Thelma and Louise, with a smile on our face.”

While we love the classic film about ladies on the lam, we don’t think it’s the right metaphor for the Turnpike’s financial situation. After the jump, we consider some more appropriate options.

Hall of Famer Howie

Back in April, we let you know that local media personality Howie Carr was in the running to be enshrined in the Radio Hall of Fame. The reluctant WRKO host got the news yesterday that he’d bested several other regional radio personalities and will indeed be inducted in the Hall.

Julie Donaldson Calls in the Big Guns

1215617899Channel 7 sports reporter and alleged abuse victim Julie Donaldson is going on the offensive. She had been playing defense after her allegations against her SlamBall-playing boyfriend got play in both daily papers. Then there were the rumors that there’s a sex tape she and Ivan Lattimore made hours before she says he bit and punched her in front of some guests. But no more.

Today we learned that the reporter is calling in a high-profile PR firm and lawyer.

The Last Word

Your long day of corporate drudgery is over. Get out and enjoy the city! Here are a few ideas to get you started, lovingly picked by Boston Daily.

Had a stressful day? Us too. Head to Jamaica Plain to unwind at the Lantern Festival. The event is inspired by a Buddhist ceremony in which people write messages on floating lanterns to their loved ones who have died. It’s a little morbid, but look how pretty!

Nigel Barker Says Shark Hunting Is Not Fierce

We here at Boston Daily love animals. From gregarious turkeys to flustered mother ducks, we love all God’s creatures. (Aside from the ones that try to kill us.)

But we also love local traditions. So our feelings about this weekend’s 22nd Annual Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament are conflicted. More than 200 boats will try to catch sharks off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, prompting an outcry from animal rights activists.

Asking for Trouble?

This communique just arrived from City Hall:

“Mayor Menino and Boston Fire Commissioner Roderick Fraser … will celebrate the opening of the new, state of the art training facility, a six-story tower and two-and-a-half story concrete structure with 16 burn rooms, a maze, a tactical tower, and an elevator-training simulator. Two brand-new ladder trucks will also be on display, and the fireboat will be stationed off the shore of Moon Island. BFD recruits will also perform exercises.”

Given this occasion, I’d like to be the first one to ask the question: Will it have a weight room?
