The Last Word

Your long day of corporate drudgery is over. Get out and enjoy the city! Here are a few ideas to get you started, lovingly picked by Boston Daily.

When we think of Beacon Hill on Halloween, we think of some pretty great trick-or-treating, but the neighborhood also offers thrills beyond a bag full of candy. Beacon Hill With a Boo! takes gore-seekers to the sites of some of Beacon Hill’s grisliest murders.

Mohegans, Aquinnahs and Senecas Unite?

We already know that the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Martha’s Vineyard, in their quest to open a casino in Massachusetts, have partnered with the Seneca Nation of Indians, experienced gamers from western New York. But could another alliance, this time with Connecticut’s Mohegan Tribe (of Mohegan Sun fame), be on the horizon?

“I wouldn’t rule that out,” says Mohegan Tribe Chief of Staff Chuck Bunnell. “The two tribal nations have a long history of communication and are continuing in that vein of openness. At this point in time there is no agreement. But certainly we have a lot of mutual respect and we continue to communicate.”

Battle of Beacon Hill

1193862594 We here at Boston Daily would like to think that today’s hearing on gambling-related social ills in the legislature is all about figuring out whether or not we should, in fact, invite casinos to open their doors in the Commonwealth. But it’s not. This is about brute, all-encompassing political warfare between Governor Deval Patrick and Speaker of the House Sal DiMasi.

They’ve been at loggerheads basically since the day Patrick walked in the door. That said, this thing is escalating a lot faster than we thought it would. (more…)

Wait, The Pats Are Running It Up?

1193080546You will have to forgive us if we have been a little Red Sox-centric around here these days, but it appears that the national media has finally caught on to the fact that the Patriots have been beating teams like a BCS berth is on the line.

All the way around the internet, the pundits and analysts have just realized that the 2007 season has become The Patriots Revenge Tour. Our only question is: What took them so long? (more…)

Spanning the Web

1193768308Taking you around the internet for your afternoon enjoyment.

The non-rolling rally: Politicians, Red Sox ownership, and the team’s catchers stood on the steps of the State House today to celebrate the World Series victory. Again. We’ve had fun, but we’ve got bigger things to worry about. [Boston.com]

The Celtics Love Them Some Can-Can

1193853021It’s not often that dolls stir us to write a post, but this video is — dare we say it — Caddyshack-funny. Culled from I don’t know where, and posted on the San Antonio Express News’ site, it’s an homage to the new NBA season with a cast of cardboard cutouts that spans the league but includes — and this is important — your very own Boston Celtics.

That’s right, the Celtics are so relevant they’re now included in wacky montages. You think the Hawks got any play here? (more…)

It’s Who You Know

1193846169It’s been a busy month for our boy Ben Affleck. Not only has his directorial debut Gone Baby Gone opened to critical acclaim and unimpressive box office numbers, he’s also managed to get himself in the middle of a media controversy.

Questions For… Eilen Jewell

1193843340Boise-bred and Cambridge-based country singer Eilen Jewell’s second album, Letters from Saints and Sinners is one of my favorites of 2007, by turns rollicking and pretty, with the sort of dusty, traditional authenticity that your average local wouldn’t expect to come out of Boston. Yet it did, and Jewell—who has drawn national press and comparisons to Gillian Welch and Jolie Holland—has been touring widely with local roots stalwarts Jerry Miller (the best guitarist I’ve ever seen) and bassist Johnny Sciascia (of Tarbox Ramblers fame), to support it.

I called Eilen as she sat shotgun in the van, heading down to Virginia for a tour through the South. (more…)

What Now?

1193839290The World Series trophy is safely housed on Yawkey way, the Duck Boats are filled with tourists again, and Jonathan Papelbon has (hopefully) danced his last jig. The question for the Red Sox is: what now? In another week it will be open season on free agents and the Red Sox have two prominent ones in Curt Schilling and Mike Lowell. There’s another guy out there who might draw a little interest. Maybe you’ve heard of him, A-Something or other.

This will be an interesting offseason for the Sox (aren’t they all?) but the tenor and tone will be different from the frenzy of recent years. The foundation is set and the kids are beginning to fall into place. The shortstop should return for the first time since Nomar was still king. It will be different, but it will be interesting. After the jump, odds on the return of Lowell and Schilling, and that guy. (more…)

What’s News

Your condensed guide to today’s daily papers.

Happy Halloween: Some Salem residents lament their city’s status as the Halloween capitol of the world, saying the holiday has gotten too commercial and out of control. Funny, that’s what we like about Salem in October. [Globe]
