Boston Daily

Oh, Milton

Dear Milton Academy Student Body,

1196174581Hello there, future of America. Boston Daily here. As you may have gathered, we’re a bit older than you. Which probably makes our obsession with your extra-curricular activities slightly creepy. But we read about your latest foray into unethical behavior and we wanted to tell you something.

We’re disappointed in your latest scandal.

Almost three years ago, America was stunned by the news that five Milton Academy boys got oral sex from a 15-year-old classmate in a locker room. The combination of underage sex and rich kids would make great fodder for an episode of Gossip Girl. Now, your scandal sounds like a cheesy hacker thriller starring the Mac guy.

A Milton Academy student has been expelled and three others have been suspended for the rest of the school year after they hacked into the elite private school’s computer system, changed grades, altered attendance records, and, in one case, gained access to an exam before it was administered. . .

That’s not sexy—that’s lame. Where are the salacious details we’ve come to expect from Milton students behaving badly? Instead of a locker room full of hormone-fueled boys, we imagine a lonely nerd, pecking away in a darkened computer lab. We can only hope he changed a girl’s grades in a misguided attempt at seducing her to add a much-needed human element.

If we had to grade you, we’d give you a C- and a stern note to see us after class. Don’t even try to hack our system—we keep it old-school and use a grade book.

Sincerely,
Boston Daily

    Oh Amy,
    Dear Boston Daily,

Your obsession with our extra-curricular activities is quite odd, and I may have to press charges if it goes any further. We don’t want another scandal do we! Anyway, your article is both insensitive and totally aimless. There is no need to place stereotypes on the kids involved in either incident. Are these “hackers” are automatically lonely nerds, just because they are smart and resourceful? Are you remembering who you were in high school, and taking out your built up rage? Did you want to be the girl giving oral sex to multiple hockey players at the same time? If so, please take it out somewhere else and leave it out your work. I know for a fact that some of the individuals involved in the hacking incident were some of the sexiest kids alive. Misguided, yes. But also very sexy. This latest scandal may just be the sexiest thing to ever come out of Milton.

  2. Locke Says:

Just because the sex scandal a few years ago was such a widely publicized story does not mean that Milton Academy is a unique school in this regard. Similar ISL schools (none will be named) have had such scandals, but Milton, being the most liberal, was the most open about it. It seems like your publication just latched onto the easiest news story that was floating around, not bothering to do any investigating besides reading other publications, and maybe stalking our campus, harrassing students about the events, until asked to leave by an administrator. How can you “come to expect [salicious details] from Milton students behaving badly?” based on this one incident? What makes Milton students any different from students in the rest of the nation? In terms of the recent event, just because the event was not as “salacious” as you obviously would have liked, it has still ruined the lives of many students, not only those that were expelled or suspended. Furthermore, what you obviously don’t realize about our school is that half of us, if not more, are nerds, but we play sports, participate in the arts, and, surprisingly enough, have a social life too. I think your article emphasizes the media’s pathetic attachment to sex, and indifference to anything else. Your opinion has clearly shown that your publication is really no better, and probably worse, because you refrain from admitting what you’re really after, than gossip magazines such as Star and Us Weekly.

    Congratulations,

    Unsubscribed

  3. Ma's Lifer Says:

This is well writen and amusing, but still insanely offensive. To suggest that an academic learning center like Milton Academy is based on sex scandals and ought to be judged by such scandals is rediculous, and it is horrible apathetic to ignore the fact that a high-pressure invironment is pushing us as students. All of us are exceedingly smart, and some are even brilliant. Many can take the pressure, and some can’t. As entertaining as this was, can’t we as human beings rise above humor as primitive as fun poked at those who make mistakes? You make fun of us, and it is all in good humor, but ought you not think about who’s reading what you write?

  4. A Better Journalist Than You At Age 17 Says:

This is petty journalism. This is where sensationalism removes any legitimacy from your work. Grow up and figure out something real to write about. How about a billion people living on less than a dollar a day? Don’t pretend you’re a legitimate news source and behave like this.

  5. Jeff P Says:

This has got to be the most pathetic and ghastly attempt of “journalism” or sheer blogging out there. Are you really expressing that you are disappointed in Milton Academy’s latest scandal? That it doesn’t have enough raunchiness or sexiness to it? I hope that you are not trying to express an opinion that supports such despicable behavior simply for your own pleasure. Because that is “unethical behavior.”

The big picture is that today’s youth have problems. The same way that every generation’s youth have had problems. Granted, the youth of today seem to have a much more imperfect reputation thanks to such factors as the mass publicity brought on by the media. Regardless, the “older” community, instead of ridiculing our youth, should work to help them, and this article, Amy, is a huge travesty. As someone who posts opinions for a living, you have so much power in affecting the public’s way of thought. You should be using this power to make the public reflect upon this nation’s problems, and influence people to find ways to solve them. Instead, you abuse and waste this power by posting absolutely gratuitous remarks that really, in the end, help nobody.

That Amy is what really deserves the C-

  6. someone Says:

I don’t think there is anything to say except that this is an absolutely disgusting article making jokes of kids lives that were destroyed. I can speak for the whole Milton Academy community when I say that we lost some of our best friends in both incidents and that niether should be made into a joke.

  7. Anon. Says:

Excuse me, but when “Restless Virgins,” an embarrassingly poorly written “true novel” was published that was supposedly based around real events that took place at MA, the Milton community was 1. appauled and 2. annoyed. Now you, the Boston Globe, who claim to be advocates of good liturature, are promoting the same idea that every Milton student is up to their ears in a snooty, sex-focused, and pathetic sense of entitlment. As your entry states, only 6 students engaged in the “sex scandal” several years ago–a scandal, I might add, that everyone at Milton has been mature enough to put behind them. Now a mere handful of students hacked the computer system. You call yourselves journolists, but you’re not telling the full story. The vast majority of Milton students are good, hardworking kids who don’t deserve the reputation you’re trying to make for them.

  8. Sand King Says:

I actually now think this was because you are jealous that you were the nerdy girl who could not get a guy in high school, which is ok with me just don’t take it out on us. What kinda infuriates me is the fact that you single out Milton Academy, and completely disregard every other private school. Maybe secretly you are trying to praise us? Well then, although you are misguided, A+ for effort. Hoever, you receive a C- for content and a C- for how you act with guys.
Sincerely, All best wishes, Best wishes for your future, Bunny Fitch. P.S. Are you for or against grinding?

  9. EM Says:

    Dear Boston Daily,

At this time, it is rather difficult for me to articulate my profound displeasure in you, as a blog, and in the media sources of Boston as a whole. My life has been rocked by the most recent Milton expulsions because it’s really quite challenging for me to watch my classmates get in trouble for their actions while under the same horrendous pressure I am under each day of my life as a student here. I am personally hurt and insulted by your severe lack of knowledge in judging my school and friends. I will concede, however, that we are indeed “nerdy” and bookish. We have learned, through our wildly “nerdy” lifestyles, how to utilize our resources, even if the media does not take the time to see the constructive ways in which we establish our intellects and personalities.

Your existence should not revolve around the happenings at a place where students are learning how to thrive and deal with real-world stress. Perhaps a better use of your time would be sitting in jail, or something similarly uncomfortable. As an alternative to “our lives” being featured on Gossip Girl (as you oh-so-wittily-and-originally declared in your “writing”), you should simply propose this article to be added into the script of the next installment – I’m sure that the producers would love to add this inadequately researched gossip article.

    Sincerely,
EM, Milton Academy Class of 2010

  10. aka Surprise Says:

Ms. Durjue, this idea that you are “dissapointed in our school’s latest scandal” is condescending and laughable. Nowhere in your “article” (which sounds more like a crudely produced blog from one of those “lonely nerd[s], pecking away in a darkened computer lab” that you’re so fond of)do you take the time to see the implications of those four students decisions on either their personal lives or the Milton Academy community as a whole. In fact, I would say that you were most likely thrilled when this story dropped, as it gives you a great oppurtuinty to demean and degrade a group of kids that are, as you say “older than you”. Do you really think that this piece makes you a person of stronger moral fiber than the teenagers which you so willingly trash? And please, get off the oral sex business. I can assure you that no one at this school, or the journalstic community in general thinks it’s a “sexy” as you do. So as I dip, I’ll leave you with a little lesson you old folks should have mastered years ago when you were in highschool and not kissing anyone (YUCKY…): Just like you shouldn’t speak if you don’t have anything nice to say, you shouldnt contribute articles if they’re just going to waste everyone’s time.

    Sincerely,

    “The Future of America”

  11. The Future of America Says:

I am a Milton Academy student and I happened to know one of the “offenders.” People make mistakes, and this pathetic and attention-focused “discussion,” if you can call it that, is simply using a few kid’s mistakes to make a whole community look bad. If you want to discuss Milton, even if it’s negative, at least make sure you’re focusing on the whole student body, not a select few.
And for the record, being “disappointed in [our] latest scandal” is just plain creepy.

  12. Michael Says:

Does anyone understand sarcasm any more?

Milton Academy has made a spectacle of itself over the last couple of years. For a school that presents itself as a tier above the schools us poor “public school” kids can attain (or afford), it has not put it’s best foot forward. Milton Academy has been looking down it’s collective spoiled entitled noses at us for far too long — we’re allowed to make fun of you now.

I know most students at Milton are hard-working and ethical, and, yes, some of these things happen in public schools (and other private schools), but Milton has built quite a track record.

It’s time to get off your high horses and start living up to the standards you try to hold others to. If you’re upset with how the school and its students are perceived, then the place to start is among yourselves. Attacking a blog posting is only re-enforcing the perception that already exists. (A lesson for you to learn as you get older: Perception is Reality. You have to change the perception to change the reality.)

    Good job, as always, Amy.

BTW, Anon. — This is Boston Magazine, not the Boston Globe. It helps if you know who you’re angry with.

  13. FoA Says:

Honestly, I don’t care about our reputation. I care about the friends I lost. Let’s try to remember that the individuals involved in this whole fiasco were loved, and their lives are probably a mess right now. They do not need your witty commentary.

  14. me Says:

Let’s get this straight. NOT everyone at Milton is rich. I, for one, am a regular middle class person who worked like a dog to get in here and would not dare look down on anyone. QUIT GENERALIZING!!!

There are plenty kids at Milton who are not rich and who appreciate everything that Milton has to offer and for you to sit here and crap on all of those kids who value Milton.

  15. Isabelle Gell-Levey Says:

    Dear Boston Daily,
Allow me to grade your actions, since you were so keen on grading the actions of those students who, like you undoubtedly have, made mistakes. First, I would give you a C- for style. That beautiful article you wrote is worthy of being in the filler section of Wannabe Writers Daily. Quotations? Evidence? Compassion even? This joke of an article is the laughing stock at Milton, so congratulations. The joke is on you. Second, I would give you a D for content. Applying certain aspects of a situation to match your silly opinions is NOT, in any way, substance. It merely shows how incompetent you are, seeing as you could not formulate a mature response to this situation. Finally, I give you an A+ for being an ignorant doufus. Considering that four students out of 680 made a mistake, it is morally wrong to announce that all Milton students “behave badly”. The mistakes of a handful of students does not reflect the proper image of Milton Academy, and to say that marks the hideously unethical writing that you so marvelously displayed.

  16. EZ Says:

The sarcasm is well understood, and that is why I have a problem with this “article.” Joking about a situation such as this, along with its serious implication for the individuals involved is plain wrong. All TWO of the “scandals” at Milton Academy do not warrant any generalizations about the students involved, let alone the student body. We are not spoiled, and many of us, including those who are no longer students there because of this incident, count (or counted) Milton as their sole entitlement in life. We have rich kids, we have poor kids and we have everything in-between and it for this reason that we never intentionally “look down our collective noses” at anyone.

Scandals of all sorts happen in high-schools all over the country everyday. What high school doesn’t include sex, drugs, and violent crimes? Milton’s track record, in reality, is much cleaner than most schools, although the media will have you believe otherwise.

Sarcasm is wonderful, but please be considerate to those you are mocking. As of now, they are vulnerable and saddened.

  17. ck Says:

    chill michael^
milton’s “track record” can easily be compared to any other school’s “track record” with similar results
the fact that milton academy does not bother to waste time hushing these things up is the only real difference between them and other schools

  18. You'll Never Know Says:

I am absolutely disgusted by how you condescendingly make light of a situation that has rocked the whole Milton community. The truth is that even in your prime high school days there is no way that you could have ever pulled off what the Milton hackers did. Those four kids are in the tiniest minority of Milton’s students, and for every one of the hackers there are a hundred more equally intelligent kids willing to make the right choices. Milton Academy is a community that is brimming with talents in every field. Its’ students are the future and they, who are among the best educated, will be the leaders of the country in the years to come. I hope that you think hard about the sick message that you are sending, a message that clearly communicates how this publication values perverse entertainment. As you state in your article you are older than any of the students, which makes me sad to think that your intelligence level has already been exceeded by high school students, and that you have not outgrown your petty and childish need to gossip to make yourself feel better. Please find something better to do with your time than make a lame attempt at wit and humor.

  19. gla Says:

Milton simply has the misfortune to have all of their mistakes publicized. I can say with confidence that girls at other schools participate in oral sex with multiple boys. I can say with complete confidence that you have no idea how ignorant you sound passing judgments on this incident.

  20. N.M. Says:

Your writing style suggests that Milton Academy students are inferior to you. Regardless of your age, you generalize and judge as if you were an insecure 13, putting down others to boost your self-esteem. I find your comments offensive and your attitude towards this event insulting. Do you expect all girls at Milton to be whores, and all guys to take advantage of these girls? How do you know all the students are financially secure? And I find it lame that you would care so much about these highschool kids. Don’t you have better things to do than to pick on them? I give you an E due to your rude comments and unintelligent generalizations.

In the words of the immortal Harold Pratt:

“Sarcasm is the lowest form of humor.”

  22. annonymous Says:

You obviously have no idea what actually happened at this school, i am currently a student attending milton and the school cannot be portrayed by the old scandal that happened 3 years ago. the school is not full of hormone filled guys and girls, but some of the nicest and brightest kids around. what happened recently was a complete misconception in the news. the 4 students did not hack the school system, but simple acquired the passwords of several school faculty members.

  23. annonymous Says:

It is quite clear that since you are writing for a blog on the Boston Magazine website that you are a true failure as a journalist. It be hard being a Boston Globe reject.

  24. Paul Says:

    Ms. Derjue,

Is this article supposed to be funny? It is not funny. While it may be easy for someone such as yourself to poke fun at a school like Milton Academy, you must keep in mind that Milton educates all types of people- not just rich white kids who participate in locker room sex acts. I don’t attend Milton Academy, but I am nonetheless enraged at this article. If you post something in an online blog, you have got to realize that a lot of people are going to see it, and you should have realized that this article could be hurtful before you posted it on a public forum such as the Boston Daily Blog.

I hope you stop writing such garbage. I didn’t even crack a smile while reading this, and I will probably never visit this website again.

  25. Cullen Heater Milton Academy class of 2009 Says:

Have some respect. I understand that, for you, this is nothing more than a joke, a chance to get your name published along with this sensationalist article. But there are some people who have been legitimately affected by this event. And don’t start talking about how you’re “disappointed” in us when you’re the one desperately grasping for a legitimate career by slandering my school. I see your approach to journalism as neither productive nor honorable. You should be ashamed, and frankly, WE are disappointed in you. How dare you humiliate us. How dare you pass judgement on those who deserve nothing less than the opportunity to make mistakes without being attacked by faux-journalists desperate to make a buck.

As for your tasteless reference to the Locker Room incident…Are you serious? How does that have any correlation to what happened? Why are you so fixated on an event that, not only probably occurs in thousands of schools across the country, but also has no bearing on the recent events that your “article” is supposed to be about.

    You call yourself a journalist?

    Sincerely,

It be, indeed. Please, anonymous, if you attend or attended Milton, display your mastery of the language accordingly.

  29. milton grad Says:

I think it has been fairly well-established that the writing of this column is not only poor, but in poor taste. However, there’s less talk about the actual issue: why write this column in the first place? Why use this as a vehicle to express your own insecurities and preconceptions about class and intellectual elitism?

This column and all those like it, about this “scandal” and about the “sex scandal” and so forth, serve no purpose beyond the miniscule scope of their conception and execution. These articles are not about Milton scandals or legitimate “concerns” about adolescent sexuality. Claiming dismay and surprise that adolescents have sex or cause trouble is a simple evasive maneuver. In reality, and I am sorry that this is the case, the truth of the matter that this is all about class. Individuals perceive those who go to Milton and schools like it as the “elite,” and project ideas about elitist exclusion and haute societe when in reality they know nothing about the actual culture of the institution. The reason for media attention every time someone at Milton or at another ISL school makes a mistake? Because the largest demographic in America loves to hear about the mistakes of the elite. This explains the press coverage of Larry Summer’s rhetorical gaffes, of Kaavya Viswanathan’s plagiarism, of Ivy League professorial murders, and so on. The problem is that this overwhelming sense of us versus them only engenders this type of dialogue when it needn’t exist in the first place. Articles like this force your so-called “elite” into a defensive position, isolated from everyone else, but then they are castigated for refusing to integrate with society. What I’m saying is that the motivation for this trashy blog is the same as the motivation for every other trashy piece of coverage (including Restless Virgins, which, in its proclaimed ignorance of marketability, is all the more despicable).

Lastly, for those shining stars like Michael, I would like to ask you a general question: when has Milton Academy ever suggested that it is a tier above schools that “poor ‘public school’ kids can attain (or afford)”? Milton offers tremendous amounts of financial aid, the same way many universities do, so that it functions in a meritocratic manner, regardless of financial background. This is the concept; it is not perfect, but show me something that is. If you want to make an argument about uni-demographic schools serving the “elite,” you might want to talk about public schools in neighborhoods like Westchester.

Lastly, I would also be very interested to hear where we’re keeping these “high horses.” I don’t think Milton has ever tried to hold anyone to its standards, but hey, you’re the expert. A lesson for you to learn as *you* get older: evidence always makes an argument stronger.

  30. anonymous Says:

Personally, although the quality of the writing may be questionable, I found this article to shed some much needed light humor on an otherwise touchy subject.

  31. RP Says:

This article is not only offensive but wrong. Don’t you know how to treat others like you would like to be treated? Go to any other school and I can bet that they have had worse situations, only convered from the public by money. You are judging a school based on the act of 4 KIDS that were wrong and did a bad thing. We can all amit this, just get it through your brain that you are ruining the image of innocent kids who only want the best education possible. This article has only made it so the general public outside of Milton Academy will see each and every kid differently. You have upset our community, added to stress and only poured salt on an open wound. Your humor touches no one in the Milton community.

Yes, there are wealthy people, but their famillies all worked hard for that money and they deserve it. You have catorgorized and stereotyped a large part of the Milton student body, and should be ashamed for saying that we don’t value each and every thing milton has to offer.

  44. Thinks this blogger needs to write about better things Says:

Well, I find it incredibly laughable that you are “disappointed” in our scandal because your opinion of what happens in our school is completely irrelevant. You obviously have no connection to the Academy(judging from your writing skill) and so why you should be interested in this is beyond me(even though I could probably beat your SAT score at the age of 15). In fact the reason your stuck writing on some stupid internet blog and not a real news source is probably a combination of two reasons: One you have always been interested in voicing your unnecessary opinion in irrelevant matters, and two because you spent your high school career not working, but instead gossiping about the sexual actions of others(or perhaps yourself). In fact, the average Milton Academy student that is focused on journalism and reporting will probably have risen to a higher level than you by age 20. This is a large problem for you seeing as our seniors are only two years away from this mark and you are writing your senseless opinions on an internet blog that has about 1/1000 of the readers that a legitimate newspaper does. You need to pick it up, fast. So here’s an idea that hopefully your unintelligent, second-rate, badly educated mind can grasp: Go find your high school textbooks and learn all the material that you missed while you were investigating the sexual actions of your peers, actions that seem to interest you so much. Once you have done this, go find a topic that people care about(unlike this one) and that you also have a relevant opinion about. Finally, write something intelligent about it. If you manage this you might be able to upgrade to writing in a real news source and not end up mowing my lawn when you get so bad at journalism that even this internet blog dumps you.

I understand, with a certain degree of hope, that you were joking around in the ablove article; nevertheless, as Mr. Heater ‘09 wrote, this scandal actually affected the lives of the people involved. I happen to be friends with one of the people, and I can tell you that he is in fact very kind and considerate, is quite intelligent (most unlike you), and is a great friend. It might be hard for you to believe, but highschool students make mistakes. I find it insulting (and an idea that speaks to your itellct and character) that you are belittling their character by writing this wholly unpurposeful and dumb article. Step it up, Boston Daily.

  47. you're gay Says:
