1196342957A $2.9 billion fixer-upper: Governor Deval Patrick will file a transportation bill that will bring commuter rail service to New Bedford, repair roads, and extend the Green Line to Somerville. While he’s dreaming big, he’d also like a pony. [Herald]

The Last Word

Your long day of corporate drudgery is over. Get out and enjoy the city! Here are a few ideas to get you started, lovingly picked by Boston Daily.

Boston Daily loves cars. Especially Bentleys. While we’re still not sure how much our car insurance will cost next year, we’re excited to have the opportunity to kick some tires at the New England International Auto Show, which starts tonight at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.

Spanning the Web

Taking you around the internet for your afternoon enjoyment.

1196283259And us law-abiding citizens win nothing: A man who robbed two banks won $1 million on a scratch ticket. After his second robbery, the sentencing judge told him he couldn’t gamble, so he may have to return the money he’s already received. He also may be sent back to jail for a parole violation. [WBZ]

Gatsby Sent Us

1196282971As kids, we loved places that required a password to access. We tortured our younger siblings, demanding they learn an elaborate series of phrases to enter our bedrooms. Now that we’re adults, we thought we’d outgrown the idea of a secret club. That was until we were given the secret password that allowed us to attend the Boston Athenaeum’s Roaring Twenties Speakeasy Party last night.

How Much For Santana?

1196273812The Johan Santana auction is well underway and, not surprisingly, the word is that he won’t come cheap. Not only in terms of players, but also in terms of dollars in a new contract for the lefty. There are apparently four suitors for Santana’s services at the moment: the Sox, Yankees, Mets, and Dodgers. All four have legitimate high-level prospects to offer the Twins, and enough money to sign the man most people believe is the best pitcher in all of baseball. (more…)

Hey EFers, Now You Want to Talk About It?

As many Milton Academy students and alumni have pointed out to us, journalism isn’t easy. It requires hounding people who may not want to talk, endless Lexis searches, and stalking people on social networking sites. We do this to entertain and inform you, our valuable readers. But would it have killed you to help us out a little bit?

Mitt Romney is Having a Worse Week Than You Are, Part II

1196266107In late August, Mitt Romney had a really bad week. Charges that Idaho senator (and head of Romney’s Idaho campaign) Larry Craig solicited sex in an airport bathroom came to light, and Romney proceeded to “shiv” his friend, according to Slate magazine. The Romney campaign has been able to deal with the assorted small controversies since then, but this week’s smorgasbord of scandal may rival late summer’s season of discontent.

Margolis Not Going Down Without A Fight

1196262557Nobody likes being “let go”, especially when the news is published in the newspaper. But Boston Public Library president Bernard Margolis really doesn’t like getting fired. Instead of going quietly into that good night as so many other former members of Mayor Tom Menino’s administration have, Margolis is trying to take Menino down a few notches on his way out.

48 Minutes Not Enough to Beat C’s

1190922388We are a full month into the NBA season and already two things are clear. One, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce play just fine together, thank you. And two, you can’t beat this team in regulation. The Celtics lost for only the second time last night, and like their loss at Orlando, it took overtime and the best player in the league, for Cleveland to finish the deal.

The Celtics sounded angry after the game that they didn’t get the win, which is yet another mark of a good NBA team, but in a delightful twist, the Celtics get a rematch with Cleveland on Sunday. With the Pats not playing until Monday that should be must-see TV for Boston sports fans.

1196257079Massachusetts goes bust: A study from the Massachusetts Institute for a New Economy found that the state has yet to recover the jobs lost during the 2001 recession as a new economic downturn seems imminent. It also recommends creating manufacturing jobs to avoid creating a “boutique economy” of highly skilled careers. [Globe]
