Pretty much all the stations I use (davis sq, porter square, downtown crossing, south station) bear the hallmarks of the "deferring maintenance" that Grabauskas describes. While it's cheaper short term to skimp on maintenance, it's also generally more expensive to fix something that has gone into severe disrepair than it is to keep it maintained.
