Casinos: They’re Back Again

1211386065Exactly one week ago, Republicans in the State Senate decided they’d like to tack a few gambling amendments on to the 2009 budget since House Speaker Sal DiMasi ruthlessly dispatched Gov. Deval Patrick’s casino legislation before they could have a say. The only problem with that is the Senate budget would go back to the House, creating delays in finally knowing how screwed the state’s finances will be next year.

Therefore, the Speaker is throwing the Senate a bone, and promises to put a casino referendum on the ballot this fall.

The Rich Get Richer, and the State Gets Poorer

There have been many benefits to the state’s subsidies of the film industry. We get to see famous people walking among us everyday folk. There’s the delight of seeing the landmarks we know so well featured on the silver screen, sometimes to comedic effect.

1211381894While we’re sure Gov. Deval Patrick enjoys a Kate Hudson sighting as much as we do, the state is giving away money in the hopes of bolstering the local economy. But a new study shows that Massachusetts may actually be losing cash on the deal.

Celtics-Pistons: Game 1

1190922388Throughout the playoffs, Doc Rivers has played the role of stern parent with Rajon Rondo—never praising too much, and usually finding fault with something. But before Game 1, Doc came out strongly for his second-year point guard after yet another question about Chauncey Billups and how Rondo can’t defend him. “Rondo’s heard all year what he can’t do,” Doc said. “We’re here because of Rondo. Somebody’s going to have to guard him.”

That somebody isn’t Billups. At least, not right now. At some point, the rest of the national press is going to realize that Rondo is a hell of a player. Might as well be now. (more…)

Ted Kennedy is Going Home

1211379343It’s all Edward Kennedy all over the place in today’s papers as the world has begun to realize that the prognosis isn’t very good for the senior senator from Massachusetts. The living legend is being released from Massachusetts General Hospital this morning, and will return home to Cape Cod as he waits for more test results.

Everybody Hates Logan

The last time we flew from Logan, we didn’t have a great experience. (Thanks again to the incompetent malcontents at the security checkpoints. If you’re that miserable, shouldn’t you be working at the Registry of Motor Vehicles?)

Apparently, we aren’t the only ones who dread heading to New England’s biggest airport. The Globe reports that Logan slipped to 16th place in a survey of traveler satisfaction.

Romney PAC to the Future

1211317812When last we wrote about Mitt Romney, we had a little fun at Willard’s expense. At the time, there were rumblings that he was going to create a new Political Action Committee in order to raise money for Republicans everywhere. And, of course, himself. (Vote Hairdo in 2012!)

Now, according to the Federal Election Commission, he’s gone ahead and done just that. Replacing the decommissioned Commonwealth PAC is…drumroll…the Free and Strong America PAC.

So Long, College Students

1211310950This may be the most perfect time of year in the city of Boston. It’s still too early for the scores of visiting families to jam up the sidewalks, but the teeming masses of college students are collecting their diplomas and leaving town.

We’re delighted that the stink of gin sipped from Poland Spring bottles on the B Line is dissipating, we’re overhearing fewer high-decibel inappropriate cell phone conversations, and we can go back to believing that leggings are a fashion trend that was left in the 80’s. But, before we say good-bye, we wanted to take a look back on all the moments we’ve shared with our young seasonal residents this academic year.
