Spanning the Web

Taking you around the internet for your afternoon enjoyment.

Massachusetts Goes Commercial

Here at Boston Daily, we aren’t too worried about the tax breaks Massachusetts gives filmmakers. If the state didn’t lose money in a bid to lure Kate Hudson to town, it would probably blow it on some ridiculous pork-barrel project.

1211904183But we are a little nervous about the fact that companies are taking advantage of the state’s generosity to make TV commercials, largely because we don’t want our own state to bother the hell out of us.

Rachael Ray Gets Into International Affairs

Rachael Ray is many things. An internationally-known celebrity chef. A talk show host. A possibly-traitorous endorser of Dunkin’ Donuts.

1211899537But we’re pretty sure the Massachusetts native is not a terrorist sympathizer. Yet some conservative bloggers are accusing her of that after she wore a scarf that resembles a kaffiyeh in a Dunkin’ Donuts commercial.

Where Did All the Vacationers Go?

My friends and I hit traffic only twice on the epic journey from Narragansett, Rhode Island back to Boston yesterday. The first patch was at the split of Rt. 4 and Rt. 1 in Rhode Island, which we deftly avoided by taking back roads. The second time was at the split of 95 and 93.

1211896506Maybe the clamcakes and chowder made us hallucinate, but the traffic didn’t seem all that bad.

Weekend Redux: What You Missed

Just because you spent all weekend grilling meats and drinking beer doesn’t mean the world stopped moving. We round up the notable stories you missed.

Saturday
Whoo hoo! Free rides on the T, everybody!

Disgruntled MBTA police officers, who have routinely issued more than 100 citations for fare evasion a month, have not issued a single ticket in May and wrote only seven in April, prompting the T’s top brass to accuse them of dereliction of duty.

Needless to say, Dan Grabuaskas is unhappy with his rebellious officers, who are upset because they’re forced to patrol in plainclothes and feel they should be busy looking for more dangerous criminals (pervs!).

The Week That Was

Chronicling the past week via quick links and pithy commentary (we’re starting summer hours! edition)

1211306331Ted Kennedy had a seizure: Then things got even worse.

Jon Lester threw a no-hitter: And we’re giving all our tickets to Mrs. Keohane from now on. (No, not really, Joe.)

Mitt Romney’s PAC with a vengeance: With a little help from us, naturally. (more…)

48 (72) Hours of Freedom

It’s the weekend. You can spend it sleeping until noon, or you can enjoy it by napping on the beach. Here are some other suggestions for your precious two three days of total freedom, prepared for you by Boston Daily.

Tonight
Figawi Race Weekend is so much fun Ted Kennedy is fighting for his right to sail. Thousands of sailors will race between Hyannis and Nantucket, and there are parties galore.

While you’re down that way, check out Lure’s Spring Launch Dinner.

If tickets to the new Indiana Jones movie are sold out, you can always catch some of the magic at Symphony Hall. Conductor Laureate John Williams performs selections from the movie’s score with the Boston Pops.

You’ve got three whole days to recover, so no going home and crashing on the couch. Acclaimed DJ Armin Van Buuren spins at the Estate tonight.

Government Gets Bigger

Earlier this month, Newton Mayor David Cohen came under fire for requesting a 28 percent pay raise as the town was considering a $12 million override proposition. He announced his resignation shortly thereafter.

1211555470Gov. Deval Patrick apparently didn’t pay much attention to Cohen’s troubles. As cities and towns prepare to deal with the lean 2009 state budget, Patrick raised his office budget by 80 percent.

A Public Service Announcement From Boston Daily

1211552926If the ease with which we got a seat on the T these past few days is any indication, many of you elected to take a couple of days off to extend your long Memorial Day weekend. Even some teenagers are taking advantage of the nice weather to skip school and walk along Newbury Street, play Guitar Hero with the windows open, or whatever it is the kids do these days.

But we’d like to remind you high schoolers out there that there’s a right and a wrong way to play hooky, as 14-year-old Alexus Clarke helpfully demonstrated yesterday.
