Make Way for Ducklings: All’s Well That Ends Well

1213811748Earlier today, we reported on ducklings that were in danger of being sucked into the Christian Science Center reflecting pool’s filters. When we last left a crowd of maintenance workers and Animal Rescue League of Boston employees, they were still trying to corral the understandably upset mother duck.

We’re happy to report everything is fine.

“We don’t have the facilities to keep wildlife here,” a Rescue League employee told us just now. “We’re happy to say the entire family has been moved to the Fellsway Pond and they’re doing just fine.”

After you have a whole mess of kids, it’s only a matter of time before you move out to the ‘burbs, isn’t it?

This reminds me of when I was living in Brookline and had a pond behind the building. Residents would take a little beach chair or blanket out back with the Sunday paper. One Spring a mother duck picked our pond for her brood nest. I’m reading my paper when in walk a group of almost teenaged-almost tough guy boys. You know that age when they’re in between the cuties you want them to be and the independent grown men they think they are?

Well they swaggered over to “check this shit out” each pretending to be more blase than the other. All of sudden I hear them “AW! Duckies!” Completely unguarded joy at coming upon the fuzzy little ducklings.

So sweet! Thanks for the memory….
