New Kids on the Block: Not Loving Each Other Forever?

1220385446Bands that have been broken up for a long time often have a rough start when they get back together. When the Police reunited last year, Stuart Copeland wrote on his website that the second show of the group’s reunion tour was “ubeLIEVably [sic] lame.”

We hoped that the New Kids on the Block would avoid the reunion drama. But it seems that all is not well within the group, and they haven’t even started touring yet.

Replacing John and Elizabeth Edwards

1220469754Late yesterday, word came down that philanderer and former presidential hopeful John Edwards and his wife Elizabeth won’t appear at Salem State College on Sept. 23. Just as we expected Ted Kennedy would speak at the DNC, we figured it was only a matter of time before the scandal-plagued couple broke their engagement.

But the school still hopes to find another speaker for its long-running lecture series, which features notable politicians, sports stars, and members of the media. After the jump, we suggest some high-profile couples we’d love to hear from.

Dane Cook Has His Day

1220019604There are many institutions and people that deserve their own day. Dunkin’ Donuts free iced coffee day, for example. We’re also big supporters of Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s.

You can now add Dane Cook to that list. Yes, the City of Boston will declare September 17 to be Dane Cook Day.

This may be the one time that the Arlington native manages to coax a chuckle out of us.

The Not-So-Secret Blog of a Player’s Wife

Sports fans don’t get very much insight into the lives of players’ wives. The women behind some of our favorite stars will occasionally sit down for a magazine profile or to talk about a cause near to their heart, but rarely do we catch a glimpse of day-to-day life for these women.

1219345998Which is why we were sad to learn that Meryl Masterson (great name, by the way) wife of Red Sox pitcher Justin Masterson, removed her Xanga page.

Soon-to-Be Divorced Kid on the Block

1219157438It’s a good thing the New Kids on the Block reunited. If the band hadn’t gotten back together, it would have been a dismal stretch for Donnie Wahlberg. In November, Spike TV decided not to renew The Kill Point, a series in which the Dorchester native starred, and then in January, Wahlberg and his wife, Kim Fey, separated.

Fey decided not to hang tough with the pop star, and filed for divorce yesterday.

Man Walks Across America; Speaks With Boston Daily

1218830356“He’s Swiss. He should be on time,” says Emil Wyss, deputy consul for the Swiss Consulate. As I try to figure out if he’s making a joke about Swiss watches, Dr. Martin Vosseler appears. He is on time (it’s noon), and he arrives at the Public Garden after walking 3,500 miles from L.A.—eight and a half months on U.S. roads in nothing but walking sandals (yes, sandals). Eight million steps to raise awareness about solar energy. From L.A. to Boston. In sandals. What was that like? (more…)

Julia Child: The Spy We Loved

1218744122Julia Child was awesome.

We loved her work on The French Chef. My Life in France, the autobiography she worked on with her grandnephew shortly before her death four years ago, only increased our ardor and fed our ambitions to pack up and move to Europe someday.

Sure, her prejudice against gay men was a little troubling, but our grandparents express similar sentiments, and we still love them.

But, today’s confirmation that Child was a spy during World War II makes our love for her even greater.

Man Selling Tom Brady’s Car Wants Helicopter Upgrade

1218482946Earlier today, we saw a report on WCVB that claimed Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s 2005 International Harvester CTX is for sale on eBay. We assumed his tree-hugging girlfriend Gisele Bundchen forced him to unload the vehicle, which gets an astoundingly low eight (8!) miles to the gallon.

But unlike the times when Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz sold used stuff on the auction site, there was no picture of the prettiest quarterback of them all driving the gigantic truck in the actual listing. That seemed odd, so we contacted the seller, Shane Johnson of Dalton, Georgia, to ask if the truck really belonged to the QB.

“That’s what they tell me,” Johnson tells Boston Daily.

Chesney Fans Get Violent

One of the best things about seeing a concert at a suburban concert arena like Gillette Stadium or the Comcast Center is the pre-concert tailgating. There’s nothing better than sitting in a lawn chair on a summer evening and drinking beer in a parking lot with fans of the band you love.

1216230693We’ve pregamed before seeing acts from pop princess Kelly Clarkson (shut up) to industrial godfathers Nine Inch Nails. But we’ve never experienced a melee like the one at this weekend’s New England Country Music Festival concert, which was headlined by Red Sox wannabe Kenny Chesney.

Nigel Barker’s Experience at Oak Bluffs

1216322954Late last week, we learned that noted fashion photographer Nigel Barker would attend the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament to photograph the event for the Humane Society of the United States.

We caught up with the reality television star and got his thoughts about the shark hunt.
