The Ortiz Jersey Has a New Home

1208529158We’ve been watching in disbelief as the price of the David Ortiz jersey that was exhumed from the concrete of the new Yankee Stadium earlier this month skyrocketed on eBay. A week ago, the price was at $30,201. But when the auction, which benefits the Jimmy Fund, closed earlier this afternoon, the charity will walk away with $175,100.

Yes, that figure is correct. $175,100.

The Further Adventures of the Ortiz Jersey

Ever since the news that a Red Sox jersey was buried in concrete at the new Yankee Stadium broke, we’ve been pretty relaxed about it. Sure, we think the construction worker was foolish to spill the beans before it was too late to unearth the thing, but watching the Yankees ownership freak out while imploring the worker’s colleagues to “kick the shit out of him” was pretty hilarious.

1208529158The good times continue even though the jersey didn’t get to stay in New York. Yankees ownership managed to get classy for a minute and donated the battered item to the Jimmy Fund. The charity is auctioning off the Ortiz jersey, and the current bid for the item is $30,201. (Go ahead. Read that number again. $30,201. That’s not a bid, that’s the zip code for Alpharetta, Georgia).

Snacking for a Good Cause

After a long cold winter, baseball returns to Boston tomorrow. We’re excited to spend the afternoon at the ballpark, gorging ourselves on Fenway Franks and peanuts. (Though we’re going to avoid washing our food down with bottled Sam Adams.)

If you’re in Kenmore Square tomorrow, be sure to save some room in your dining schedule for a good cause. Alex’s Lemon Krimpets make their debut outside the Sovereign Bank from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Pole Dancing for the Children

Kids these days are fat. The Globe reports on a Newton-based company that hopes to change children’s eating habits by involving parents in revamping their diet and levels of physical activity.

1206538842But some parents are already leading by example. Instead of holding bake sales, a parent-teacher group in that town is raising money for programs by auctioning off pole dancing lessons.

Adopt-a-Marathoner Update

1205263316On Tuesday, we introduced you to our latest adoptee, former Bostonian Lindsey Webster. She’s running the Boston Marathon to support the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, which researches cures for spinal cord injuries. We asked you to support the five-time marathoner so she needn’t sell herself on the street, or max out her credit card to fund the run herself.

And you have come through.
