The Buried T-Shirt Stunt Jumps the Shark

When news broke that a construction worker had buried a David Ortiz jersey in the new Yankee Stadium, we knew it was only a matter of time before it spawned imitators. Sigh. People are so predictable.

Apple Store to Open on Thursday

1210602252On the 15th day of May, Apple will open what may be its largest store ever. And, it will be good.

Just when we’d put down our shiny new MacBooks long enough to bathe, we’ve got to forsake showering again to get a prime space in line for the grand opening on Thursday evening.

You Dream It, He Does It

One of the best things about Boston Daily HQ is its location right near the Christian Science Center. It’s great to take a stroll around the reflecting pool, especially now that it’s full of water for the warm weather.

The only downside is that on hot days we must fight off the temptation to jump into the gigantic wading pool and splash around. There are several signs warning visitors not to cave to their base instincts, and most people typically obey.

But yesterday, we saw a guy take the plunge.

Comm. Ave. Closed

As if commuting into the city via Commonwealth Avenue on an average weekday weren’t difficult enough, a medical supply truck has wreaked havoc at the intersection of Comm Ave and Babcock Street. Comm Ave is closed in both directions, the haz-mat team has been called in, and the B line is running shuttle buses between the Blandford Street and Brighton Avenue stops.

The Foreclosure Crisis Hits Renters

1210190588As renters, we’ve felt pretty comfortable as the foreclosure crisis has spread. We continue to write our check to the landlord every month, then watch news reports about families losing their homes with a mix of shock and relief.

Those poor people. Better them than us, though.

At least, that’s what we thought. A new report shows that New England’s renters have been affected by the mortgage crisis as much (if not more so) than single-family homeowners.

Apple Store Will (Allegedly) Open on May 16

1210103288We have a confession to make. Your friends here at Boston Daily are Mac geeks. Flannery and I each got shiny new MacBooks recently, and our loved ones have started to worry about our slavish devotion to the machines. Also, our refusal to put the thing down and get in the shower is starting to bother them. (ed: speak for yourself)

So we’re thrilled beyond words to read (via Universal Hub) that the new Apple store location on Boylston Street is (allegedly) opening on May 16.

You Bought It, You Fill It

In the halcyon days when I first got my driver’s license, gas cost less than $1 a gallon. A week’s worth of commuting to school, Dunkin’ Donuts, and my part-time job could be financed by a single evening of babysitting. It was a great time to be a teenager in the suburbs.

1210082720But even back when a gallon of bottled water cost more than the same amount of fuel, I was happy to not have to pay to fill the hulking trucks and SUVs that some of my classmates drove. So I can’t feel too bad for people who bought huge vehicles and now can’t afford to keep them running.

Violence Is not the Answer to Yankees vs. Red Sox Fans

Times are tough for the New York Yankees and their fans. Hank Steinbrenner has been reduced to cursing about the marketing genius of the Red Sox front office as his team lingers near the basement of the AL East with lowly Toronto. Instead of being greeted with piques of misplaced rage, Yankees fans who wear gear in Boston are now greeted with sympathetic chuckles. But not all the time.

A Nashua, N.H. woman allegedly killed a man after they had a fight about which team is superior.

Black Hole for the Milky Way

There are precious few places in Boston where one can rent a pair of wretched shoes and get his or her bowl on. Or sing karaoke with a live band. Soon these activities will be even harder to find. The Jamaica Plain Gazette reports that the Milky Way Lounge and Lanes has been forced to close.

Civic Behavior at the Boston Civic Summit

1209997642At Saturday’s inaugural Boston Civic Summit, people were really excited about the food. Shortly after we arrived, the second breakout education session let out and attendees trekked to a third-floor ballroom for a State Street-sponsored lunch of salads and cold sandwiches. Vivien Li made the parallel between eating together and working together as she introduced speakers Ron Bell and Dr. Thomas Sander to the hungry crowd.
