WHDH Goes HD

Those of us with high-definition televisions have been stuck watching most local news broadcasts in standard definition. Channel 5 made the switch last May, but the other local news outlets had been slow to adopt the new technology before federal law requires all-digital broadcasts starting in 2009.

1215020513But today, another local news outlet will go digital. Boston Daily has learned Channel 7 will start broadcasting in HD starting with today’s noon broadcast. (It’s on right now! Head to the gym and check it out.)

Happy Howie Carr Day

This afternoon, the Duck Boats will be called into service to transport a champion, and Howie Carr will be paraded through the streets of Boston. While he is not nearly as svelte as the usual Duck Boat paraders, Carr has nearly as many slavishly devoted followers as the athletes we’re used to seeing.

Yes, WRKO has deemed today Howie Carr Day in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Cambridge Is America’s Worst Best Walking City

Due to high gas prices and a dearth of parking, those of us who live in Cambridge generally walk to our destination. As experienced Cantabridgian pedestrians, we were surprised to hear that Prevention magazine is presenting the city with an award for being Best Walking City in America.

Cambridge, Massachusetts? Seriously?

Will Webcasts Save Local Journalism?

We love local news in all its forms, whether we’re forcing asking the interns to read the community papers for Townie Town Hall or watching our beloved anchors on the evening news.

1216930579That gives us an idea: What if television’s taking heads joined forces with the scribes at smaller newspapers? After watching the latest edition of CapeCast, the Cape Cod Times’ online news show, we think it could be ratings gold.

It’s Never Too Late to Say You’re Sorry

In today’s Herald, we get to read part of ex-Channel 7 GM Randi Goldklank’s apology for her tirade at Logan Airport. She explains her “out of character” behavior was due to the alcohol she consumed before getting on the plane.

1216927183Now that we’ve heard Goldklank say she’s sorry, we started thinking about all the other people who owe us some apologies. After the jump, we air our grievances.

Scully to Leave BoMag

1216834041After 24 years, and almost as many job titles, Boston magazine president Dan Scully is stepping down. Scully told the staff at a meeting late this morning.

“I know that we will be fine,” says Scully. “I just have to get past my Catholic guilt.”

Scully will continue to serve the mag as senior publishing consultant, and one of his first goals will be to ease the transition for incoming president Randy Hano, former publisher of Chicago magazine and a veteran of the Herald, who will take over on August 4. (more…)

Arroyo? Arroyo? Arroyo?

The Monday after a nice summer weekend is always the worst. You crawl to your desk, chugging cup after cup of lukewarm communal office coffee, swearing that you’re going to take Friday off to give yourself a precious midsummer long weekend. Maybe you’ll even be so bold as to call out sick.1216667379

And, hey, why not? It’s not like the local media is going to cover whether you show up or not. Unless you’re bodybuilding firefighter Albert Arroyo.

A Jingle-Singing Contest? That’s Nice.

With all the recent changes to the long-running Bernie and Phyl’s commercials, it’s great to see the jingle remain the same. As if to ease the transition to when Bernie and Phyl’s sons completely take over the family business, some ads only feature random groups of people mangling the trademark “Bernie and Phyl’s—Quality, Comfort, and Price—That’s Nice” finish to the spots.

Those folks should have held off on signing the release. The furniture store is holding a contest to find the most creative jingle singer.

Hall of Famer Howie

Back in April, we let you know that local media personality Howie Carr was in the running to be enshrined in the Radio Hall of Fame. The reluctant WRKO host got the news yesterday that he’d bested several other regional radio personalities and will indeed be inducted in the Hall.

Julie Donaldson Calls in the Big Guns

1215617899Channel 7 sports reporter and alleged abuse victim Julie Donaldson is going on the offensive. She had been playing defense after her allegations against her SlamBall-playing boyfriend got play in both daily papers. Then there were the rumors that there’s a sex tape she and Ivan Lattimore made hours before she says he bit and punched her in front of some guests. But no more.

Today we learned that the reporter is calling in a high-profile PR firm and lawyer.
