Bands that have been broken up for a long time often have a rough start when they get back together. When the Police reunited last year, Stuart Copeland wrote on his website that the second show of the group’s reunion tour was “ubeLIEVably [sic] lame.”

We hoped that the New Kids on the Block would avoid the reunion drama. But it seems that all is not well within the group, and they haven’t even started touring yet.

When John Gonzalez sounded the call for New Kids on the Block stories, we got a couple dozen comments from enthusiastic fans, and our email server groaned as Gonz was inundated with messages from people who were happy to talk about what NKOTB meant to them.

So we figured that these same fans would have lined up to buy a copy of The Block, the New Kids’ first album of new material since 1994, which dropped today. We sent intrepid correspondent Mandi Wells over to Newbury Comics this afternoon to survey the chaotic scene.

There are times when we are occasionally embarrassed to be from this great country. When George Bush goes to Europe and sticks his foot in his mouth. The continued success of According to Jim while Arrested Development is long gone.

But when our faith in America is shaken, we can now claim David Ortiz as one of our own. The Dominican-born slugger officially became an American citizen in a ceremony this afternoon.

We remember the time when a sleepover was the biggest thing that happened in our social calendar. We’d unroll our New Kids on the Block sleeping bag, wash down a large quantity of Doritos with gallons of Sprite, and watch Saved by the Bell in the morning.

The under-10 set aren’t the only ones preparing to spend a night away from home this long weekend. Former governor Mitt Romney is having a sleepover at John McCain’s house.

This past weekend, I made a brief pit-stop at the Kiss 108 concert, where I spent time interviewing everyone’s favorite man-band, New Kids on the Block.

Despite my time in their company, I need a little help understanding the New Kids and, more specifically, the mania their fans embody. Which is where you come in, dear readers.
