There’s a great line in the movie version of All The President’s Men, when Ben Bradlee (as played by Jason Robards) says to Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward:
“Now hold it, hold it. We’re about to accuse Haldeman, who only happens to be the second most important man in this country, of conducting a criminal conspiracy from inside the White House. It would be nice if we were right.”
John Tomase, reviled Herald beat writer, lays out how he “got it wrong” in the paper today, but nowhere, apparently, was there a hard-bitten editor to say, “Slow down kid. Ya don’t have it yet.” (more…)
We’ve bought a lot of things we later regretted. Used bookstores refuse to buy our copy of A Million Little Pieces. Then there was the time we were drunk and purchased Britney Spears’Greatest Hits CD.
But those transgressions are small compared to the pain Paul Minihane is experiencing. The state Supreme Judicial Court ruled today that he owes the Patriots the balance of his 10-year contract for two luxury season tickets.
The only thing we’re more excited to see than tomorrow’s edition of the Herald is next week’s season finale of Gossip Girl. Both the Globeand Heraldsay that John Tomase is going to explain how the erroneous report of a tape of the Rams’ 2001 Super Bowl walkthrough ever made it into the paper.
Last week, we argued against rushing to judgment on John Tomase, the Herald beat writer assigned to the Patriots, until the facts from the Matt Walsh Spygate testimony were in. Well, it’s judgment time.
Today, the Herald apologized for Tomase’s Super Bowl walkthrough tape story in the form of front and backpage headlines, and a three-paragraph retraction. Clearly this is no ordinary mea culpa. You may recall, there wasn’t this much outrage when the tab owned up to printing a piece of satire about Hillary Clinton and Dick Cheney as straight news.
In this town, of course, the Patriots are bigger than a bogus story about presidential politics. (more…)
The day Patriots fans had been dreading for months came and went yesterdaywhen Matt Walsh handed over the information he claimed to have about the his former employer.
After all the hints, whispers, and innuendo, this is what we got: eight tapes dating from 2000-2002, none of which were of the infamous Super Bowl walk-through practice. The only news to come out of the whole deal is the revelation that the Pats were also capturing their opponents offensive signals.
Still, if the entire debate hinged on a “smoking gun” walk-through tape, and one hasn’t been produced, the Pats come out of this appearing strangely vindicated. Either way, it looks like the whole Spygate debacle is just about done.
Instead of worrying about Tom Brady’s physical health during the off season, Patriots fans have been more concerned with how his masculinity is holding up. TMZ.com called the quarterback an “errand boy” for girlfriend Gisele Bundchen. Our local gossipmongers have worried that Brady is becoming a little too metrosexual.
We’d argue that the QB is remarkably secure in his masculinity. Not only is he confident enough to walk around wearing skinny scarves, but Forbes revealed today that Brady’s girlfriend earned way more than he did last year.
With all the excitement from playoff basketball, and the city’s massive crush on Jacoby Ellsburygrowing stronger by the day, it’s easy to forget about the Patriots. Sure, we hear about Tom Brady’sEuropean adventures with Gisele Bundchen, but we’re doing our best to put the 18-1 season behind us.
The Patriots organization is also loathe to think about the heartbreaking finish to the 2007 season. The Smoking Gun reports that the team is still trying to trademark the phrase, 19-0.
Despite last year’s heartbreaking loss in the Super Bowl, we still love Tom Brady. He’s become the Bill Clinton of sports—despite his personal issues, we still remember all the prosperity we’ve had during his tenure.
So we’re totally fine if No. 12 wants to wear European-style clothes and jet around the world with his supermodel girlfriend if that’s what he wants to do with his offseason.
The Inside Track is less forgiving of Brady’s new style, though.
We’re conflicted here. On the one hand, people really gotta let Spygate go. The Pats lost, and the NFL hasn’t ruled on any impropriety. On the other hand, it’s been fun to follow the trail of vitriol the rest of the media spills. Bill Belichickchecking out a college student, or the debate over whether or not Tom Bradyis whipped by his hot supermodel girlfriend—both fine topics.
But nothing compares to South Park. Clips from an episoderip apart the methods of the Patriots coach. Yeah, it’s cruel, and we’re getting fed up with the jokes, but the treatment is kind of funny, too.
