Manny Hits the Moon While Yankees Struggle

1211399258I fully expected Manny Ramirez to hit his 499th and 500th home runs during last night’s game. Not only did I miss Jon Lester’s no-no by one day (I was in the Fens for Sunday’s sweep of the Brewers), but I’d turned down a free ticket to last night’s game. Luckily, Keohane’s wife wasn’t in attendance so nothing incredible happened.

Sox fans can prepare themselves for the auspicious day when Manny finally joins the 500 club. Massachusetts native Joe Pernice has written a song to honor the Sox slugger, and you can download it for free from the Pernice Brothers website until the 500th home run is history.

Thoughts from Fenway on Jon Lester’s No-No

1211294970Walking away from Fenway last night (I had tickets, suckers), going down Jersey Street, I overheard a father and his young son talking. The son was annoyed because he didn’t know Jon Lester had a no-hitter going until the game was over.

“But why didn’t you tell me,” the kid said.

“Because of superstition,” the father said. “I didn’t want to jinx it.”

“But I didn’t know.”

“I tried to drop some hints.”

“But I didn’t know.”

“I know you didn’t.”

The father seemed pretty confident that he was in the right on this one. That superstition is the second most interesting part of watching a no-hitter—particularly when the crowd decides it’s time to stop pretending that they hadn’t noticed the big zero on the board, and acknowledge that they know what’s going on. Mac Mania

1210944313The line to get in to the Boylston Street Apple Store stretched down Fairfield Street for several blocks for last night’s grand opening. Some determined souls had spent the night in front of the three-floor Mecca of Macs, but most of the people we spoke to showed up sometime during the afternoon.

Though no one seemed to know why.

Monster Chefs Take Over Fenway Park

1210687134The Red Sox may have been playing in Minneapolis last night, but there was still plenty of cheering going on at Fenway Park. The first ever Monster Chef event was held at the EMC Club, and Boston magazine president Dan Scully (we call him el jefe) got in the kitchen to work some magic.

The Buried T-Shirt Stunt Jumps the Shark

When news broke that a construction worker had buried a David Ortiz jersey in the new Yankee Stadium, we knew it was only a matter of time before it spawned imitators. Sigh. People are so predictable.

Now Playing the Part of Bill Buckner. . . Clooney?

We always wonder who would play us in the film version of our lives. An elderly man who did maintenance on my first overcrowded undergrad apartment once told me I look like Alyssa Milano, but I think Allyson Hannigan would better capture my personality.

1210341013But if we were casting the part of Bill Buckner, we would never think to call George Clooney. But Billy Buck thinks the two-time Sexiest Man Alive should play him in a local filmmaker’s project.

Questions For… Dave O’Brien

1210108022There was much rejoicing throughout the land last year when the Red Sox signed up Dave O’Brien to become the radio voice of the team, but his national schedule with ESPN limited him to just 60 games. O’Brien is in for almost a full slate this year, and we caught up with him to talk about the Red Sox, his work for ESPN, the difference between radio and TV, and life on the road with Manny.

Just How Senseless Was The Red Sox-Yankees Accident?

1210166277Earlier this week, reports surfaced that 29-year-old Matthew Beaudoin was killed by a drunk driver. The driver, a Yankees fan, was allegedly trying to scare Beaudoin and his friends after a fight over which baseball team was superior, but struck him instead of spooking him.

The incident met with a universal outcry from fans, with some petitioning Red Sox ownership to honor Beaudoin with a day in his honor at Fenway Park. But the late Red Sox fan’s girlfriend tells the Herald that the fight that led to the accident wasn’t about baseball after all.

Violence Is not the Answer to Yankees vs. Red Sox Fans

Times are tough for the New York Yankees and their fans. Hank Steinbrenner has been reduced to cursing about the marketing genius of the Red Sox front office as his team lingers near the basement of the AL East with lowly Toronto. Instead of being greeted with piques of misplaced rage, Yankees fans who wear gear in Boston are now greeted with sympathetic chuckles. But not all the time.

A Nashua, N.H. woman allegedly killed a man after they had a fight about which team is superior.

Bucking the Rules for FOX Sports

1209740068The worst thing about the Sox making it to the playoffs is that our benevolent overlord Jerry Remy and his henchman Don Orsillo are forced to leave us in the completely incapable hands of Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. After 162 games (give or take a few national broadcasts), the men who giddily narrated blowouts and walk-off home runs make way for the two goons from FOX.

While Red Sox fans around the city may mute their televisions and turn on WRKO to hear the game called by someone who actually knows the names of the players (ahem, McCarver), it seems that a government official was making it easier for the duo to get into the booth.
