Questions For… Dave O’Brien

1210108022There was much rejoicing throughout the land last year when the Red Sox signed up Dave O’Brien to become the radio voice of the team, but his national schedule with ESPN limited him to just 60 games. O’Brien is in for almost a full slate this year, and we caught up with him to talk about the Red Sox, his work for ESPN, the difference between radio and TV, and life on the road with Manny.

Randy Moss: Renaissance Man

Patriots fans know all too well what Tom Brady has been up to during the off-season. Meanwhile, Bill Belichick has apparently been taking hairstyle tips from Dennis Eckersley. Oh, and Dan Koppen got married to a cheerleader.

But we haven’t heard much from Randy Moss since the domestic abuse charges against him were dropped. Apparently, he’s also been busy with side projects.

Sports Weekender

In this edition of the Weekender, the Celtics come up small, the Red Sox come up even smaller, and the Patriots draft linebackers, corners, and a quarterback (?)

It wasn’t so much that the Celtics lost a game in Atlanta this weekend. Only one NBA series looks like it’s headed for a sweep (Denver-LA), and from Phoenix to Toronto, underdogs made at least one impassioned defense of their home court in every other series. It was the way the C’s went down that was so disconcerting. They abandoned their offense, reverting to what Doc Rivers calls “hero ball,” (also known as a desire to go 1-on-5) and they played with all the intensity of a second game of a back-to-back in January.

The Hawks should have quit while Josh Smith was throwing in 3-pointers like he was Mookie Blaylock, but they couldn’t leave well enough alone. Al Horford, who has been the only consistent player for Atlanta in this series, took the time to taunt Pierce toward the end of the game, and the rest of the team can’t stop yapping.

If the Celtics are who they say they are (cue Denny Green), then we finally have a playoff game worth watching tonight. (more…)

Fly Eagles Fly

Yikes. When did Boston College become Florida State?

Over the weekend, Brady Smith became the latest Eagle to have his mug shot taken when the defensive end was charged with sexual assault. If that wasn’t bad enough, he was also accused of breaking and entering.

If anyone over at BC is reading, it might be time to have a talk with your players. Because running afoul of the law is becoming a habit. (more…)

The Bruins Win, but Still Get Shafted

This week has been an great one for sports fans. The Celtics wound down the regular season in advance of the playoffs. The Red Sox played the Cleveland Indians and a Pope-shortened series against the Yankees. And the Bruins started what we thought would be a quick 4-game playoff series against the Montreal Canadiens.

1208527026But the Bruins have held their own against the heavily-favored Habs, which has left both Bruins and Red Sox fans wondering what channel their team is on.

Boston Is a Two-Marathon Town

Every year in late April, Boston becomes a runner’s city as restaurants load up on carbohydrates for the thousands of athletes that descend on the city for the Boston Marathon. But Monday’s race isn’t the only show in town this year. Over 150 elite female runners will compete in the 2008 Womens Olympic Marathon Trials on Sunday morning.

1208440100We spoke to Cambridge’s own Carly Graytock, who will making her second attempt to make the Olympic marathon team this weekend.

The Marathon Goes Commercial

Working in sports marketing is like walking through a minefield. While most major league ballparks are plastered with advertisements, fans balked a couple of years ago when MLB planned to put Spider Man 2 logos on the bases. It seems there is a fine line between making money and desecrating history in the minds of spectators.

1208362255Now it’s time for the Boston Marathon to straddle that line. Today’s Globe reports that for the first time in 112 years, the famous race will allow advertisements.

Jane Hopes to Be Swift

Next Monday, scads of runners will take to the streets for the 112th running of the Boston Marathon. We already know that Lance Armstrong will be there, along with Lindsey Webster, Boston Daily’s adopted marathoner. But another dignitary will also be in attendance.

And This is Where You Can Stick Your Quaffle

1207938353Look at this photo from today’s BU Daily Free Press. Now let me ask you something: When did college kids become so lame? I ask because, you know, last year I was one and if memory serves, I was lame—some might even say sophomoric and all to willing to fall back on a good fart joke—but I wasn’t this lame. Come on BU students. You have got to be kidding me. Don’t you have some form of alcohol or drug you could be intaking somewhere?

And do your parents know they’re spending $35K a year so you can run around with a broom between your legs? (more…)

Will We Soon Have a Halberstam Street?

1207663461Last month, Globe columnist Kevin Cullen wrote that Causeway Street should be renamed to honor sports legend Red Auerbach. The idea is still in its infancy, but Cambridge is working on its own plan to honor a legend of its own. A classmate of the late David Halberstam wants to rename Plympton Street to honor the journalist.
