Kevin Convey Reacts to Massarotti’s Departure

1218568621Earlier today, we wrote that the Herald was the organization left standing in the most recent game of sports media musical chairs, with Rob Bradford and Tony Massarotti leaving for other outlets. But the tabloid’s editor, Kevin Convey, doesn’t see it that way.

Convey tells Boston Daily that while he’ll miss the duo, their departure makes room for “lower echelon people to move up and become the next Maz and Bradford.”

We can’t help but think he’d rather have the current editions of Maz and Bradford than any theoretical versions 2.0, but at least he gets why they made their moves. Right?

“To be frank, I’m not quite sure that I understand the allure of working for a website once you’ve been a columnist with a voice,” Convey says.

Might that allure have something to do with this? Or this? Or this? (Note: empirical testing has proven that it is possible to write online with a voice, even from your parents’ basement, if necessary.)

Sports Media Musical Chairs

Is there anything reliable in sports anymore? Suddenly, 13 is the new 16, China is winning more gold medals than us (a lot more), Manny’s in LA and then, in the biggest shocker of them all, Manny actually cut his hair a little. Worse, now we can’t even keep straight the people who are delivering us our regular news about this mad, mad world.

1218820909Last night, Adam Reilly posted a Globe memo that announced several staffing changes in the local sports media. The Herald’s Tony Massarotti is moving to Morrissey Boulevard to become the “face and voice of boston.com sports.” Amalie Benjamin will take over the Red Sox beat from Yahoo! Gordon Edes.

And Scott’s Shots reports that Ron Borges (who we thought had faded into Bolivian) will be writing for the new WEEI.com.

After the jump, we consider the winners and losers.

Michelle Guerette Rows Closer to Gold

In this month’s issue of Boston magazine, we profiled Michelle Guerette, the Cambridge rower who hopes to win a gold in the women’s open-weight single scull competition at the Beijing Olympics.

We’re happy to report that Guerette has advanced to the semifinals.

Favre to the Jets

1218121186Any hope that the Summer of Brett would end soon went out the window this morning when the news broke that the New York Jets acquired the unretired quarterback from the Green Bay Packers. Had Brett Favre gone to Tampa there’s a good chance the NFL world have been returned to its normal state—because, really, who cares about Tampa? But with Favre in NYC, we’ve only just begun.

Jet Favre! Screams the front of the NY Daily News.

The NY Post ran the same headline in smaller type on its front, but recovered nicely with Brett the Jet!

What does it all mean to the Pats? In a way, this already benefits them. With Favre in the division, not to mention Bill Parcells in Miami, the Pats are no longer the most compelling drama in the AFC East, which undoubtedly suits them just fine. (more…)

Manny and Favre Learn About Life

1190753159Over this past lovely summer weekend, the sports headlines were dominated by two superstar athletes who are, as the papers like to say, disgruntled. One, Manny Ramirez, wants out. The other, Brett Favre, wants back in.

The treatment each is receiving seems a little different, no? Understand, this isn’t a defense of Manny. The “poor Manny is getting killed by the evil media” thing has gotten as tired as the left fielder’s act itself. Ramirez should be getting ripped for his inexplicable, and poorly-timed, outburst. But what the press has missed in both Manny and Favre’s narrative acts is this comes down to what it always comes down to in professional sports: control.Neither one has it and both are acting out as a way to get it back. Now Playing Second Base for the Sox…Kenny Chesney?!

When Dustin Pedroia became the starting second baseman last year, we might have said some uncharitable things about his dismal performance at the plate early in the season. There may have been a time when we sang part of “The Lollipop Guild” song from The Wizard of Oz after a particularly infuriating at-bat. But, fast-forward a year, and we’re eating our words. (Sorry, Dustin.)

Pedroia started the All-Star Game and we can’t imagine anyone else playing second for our Sox.

1216230693Especially Kenny Chesney.

The All-Star Game: Sleep Doesn’t Matter

1216222274Despite the tireless efforts of FOX, we just can’t get excited for the All-Star Game. No matter how many times we’re told it matters, the drummed-up pageantry is exhausting. Especially when 98 percent of the ceremony is dedicated to the awesomeness of Yankee Stadium. If it were that great, they wouldn’t have built a new one.

But this year’s All-Star proceedings got some people worked up. Most notably Jonathan Papelbon.

Julie Donaldson’s Ordeal

As habitual readers of Boston Daily well know, we love our local sports reporters. (Especially the cute blonde ones.) They share in the joy of a championship, and are there for us in the agony of defeat at the hands of the Rays. We can’t help but grow attached to them.

1215617899Which is why we were shocked and saddened to hear that Channel 7 sports reporter Julie Donaldson was allegedly abused by her Slamball-player boyfriend.

A-Rod’s Boston Stripper

Even before Cynthia Rodriguez filed for divorce from Alex Rodriguez, we knew the Yankees third baseman was a cad. Last year, A-Rod did damage control in Boston after he’d been caught having dinner with a stripper in Toronto. We also knew he was a bit of a sissy, what with the ball-slapping incident in the 2004 ALCS.

1215525029Today, the Herald reports that A-Rod had a dancer friend he liked to visit and have girl-drinks with when he was in Boston.

Prepare for a Summer of -Rod Headlines

1215442815It started with “Yer Out!” on Thursday, but today the New York Post’s front page screamed “D-Rod.”

After rumors started flying that Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was hooking up with Madonna, Cynthia Rodriguez packed up for a weekend at Lenny Kravitz’s house in Paris, and sent her lawyers to file for divorce this morning in Florida.

Oooh, juicy.
