The Cost of Love

1210949458Being in a long-distance relationship sucks. You stay tethered to your phone like a lovesick teenager to keep the lines of communication open. There’s no calling up your significant other and asking him to come over and make out on a whim.

And now it’s becoming prohibitively expensive for couples to travel and get that much-needed face time.

Mike Ross’ Excellent Biking Adventure

1210771195Mayor Tom Menino isn’t the only politician in the city who’s excited for Bay State Bike Week. Our MySpace friend and Boston City Councilor Mike Ross is also participating by leaving his car in the garage and commuting by bike from Mission Hill to City Hall. He gave us his thoughts on how many hazards bikers face, the unforeseen issues that came up, and tricks to keep your suit looking nice in your backpack.

T-Mizzy Keeps on Biking

Earlier today, we told you that we can’t ever see enough pictures of Mayor Tom Menino riding a bike. The Globe has this hilarious image in its archives, and provides further amusement in today’s edition.

1210688778But the Herald may win the day by providing video of Menino tooling around the city in his bright blue track suit.

It’s Not Easy Getting the Green Line

1210084994The epic struggle to get Green Line service extended into Somerville and Medford continued yesterday. The project’s advisory board met to discuss exactly where the new stops would be located, and where the light rail line would run.

The news that five of the seven new stops would be in Somerville should make the city’s T-starved populace happy. But the Somerville Journal reports that some residents aren’t thrilled to see the train coming.

You Bought It, You Fill It

In the halcyon days when I first got my driver’s license, gas cost less than $1 a gallon. A week’s worth of commuting to school, Dunkin’ Donuts, and my part-time job could be financed by a single evening of babysitting. It was a great time to be a teenager in the suburbs.

1210082720But even back when a gallon of bottled water cost more than the same amount of fuel, I was happy to not have to pay to fill the hulking trucks and SUVs that some of my classmates drove. So I can’t feel too bad for people who bought huge vehicles and now can’t afford to keep them running.

Watch Where You Walk on the Longfellow

1207748693We here at Boston Daily don’t have any degrees in engineering. The most advanced thing we’ve ever built was a Lego castle. But we must say that we’re having some serious doubts about the structural integrity of the Longfellow Bridge.

A Jolt to the BoltBus

1209134108In today’s business section of the Globe, the paper wrings its hands about the sudden flood of low-cost bus carriers on the Boston-New York route. Newcomers BoltBus and MegaBus join the already established ranks of Fung Wah, Lucky Star, and good old Greyhound in shuttling college students and other bargain hunters between Beantown and the Big Apple.

But we think BoltBus is gonna be just fine in this competitive market. Much like the massively popular Fung Wah, BoltBus is already crashing.

We Don’t Want Taxi TV

1209069517It’s been a while since we’ve been to New York City. (We’ve been waiting for that sweet $1 bus ticket.) But the good people at New York magazine’s Daily Intel wrote about a Big Apple phenomenon called Taxi TV.

Please God, don’t let anyone bring this horrible idea to Boston.

Your Patriot’s Day Survival Guide

At long last, Patriot’s Day is nearly here. After dealing with nightmare commutes during blizzards, and an unusually early Easter, it’s the first chance we’ve had to really get out and celebrate spring.

The curmudgeons among us view the third Monday of April with dread. Most of the city’s roads are closed, making it nearly impossible to get around by car. Those who aren’t lucky enough to get the day off have to contend with tourists and runners on the T.

Whether you love the madness or pout all day, we want you to be prepared. After the jump, we outline all the Patriot’s Day happenings.

Valet in the Suburbs

1208185719As anyone who’s tried to eat at a restaurant along Moody Street in Waltham on a Saturday night can attest, finding a parking spot in the suburbs is not always easy. While city-dwellers can stroll to their favorite spots, suburbanites typically don’t want to walk five miles to their supper.

But we’re not sure valet parking is required.
