Blogging Project Runway: Bring on the sturm und drang!

1197054220I’m ashamed to admit this to other Project Runway fans, but two nights ago I almost gave up our favorite show in favor of sleep. I’ve worked late all week, and got home way past midnight. Still, even though I was feeling somewhat like a member of the cast—sewing a dress made of corn husks and hoping that they won’t dry too much by morning, looking bleary eyed, craving salty snacks—I was inspired by the possibility of a dazzling runway silhouette. Which is why I stayed up to watch Bravo’s replay at 1:30 a.m.

(SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t seen Project Runway, Season 4, Episode 4, you might want to stop reading now.)

Death of the Party: Top Cab’s Bad Form

1197046005You might assume that Boston magazine editors get certain perks and/or are constantly lavished with kiss-assery, especially around Best of Boston time. But when trying, desperately, to get to the Shops at the Heritage on the Garden for a shopping event Bostonista was hosting last night, the sweet dispatchers at Top Cab all but refused to help us out, promising to show up within 15 minutes. 35 minutes later, when we called to check on our cab’s status, we were hung up on not once, but twice. Mini-Masochist: Chanel’s Blue Satin

1196963991This just in at the Bostonista test lab: Chanel Blue Satin nail polish, a shimmery royal navy that sequels last year’s ubiquitous black (Chanel’s own Black Satin nail color is an all-time best-seller). There’s already a wait list for this stuff at the label’s Newbury Street boutique.

Some of you (especially Bostonista’s male readership out there—hi, Dad) might be a little wary of dark nails, remembering your embarrassing late ’80s Culture Club obsession or that scary phase when your roommate Blaine dyed his hair purple and wore black nail polish for a month. But I promise, it’s nothing like that. (more…)

Night Lines: Best of Boston Beauty with a Dash of Bling

1196875620For last night’s Best of Boston Beauty event, Boston’s marketing team asked me to emcee a little fashion show on fun/festive/holiday dresses in the “Bebe Style Lounge.” Sure? Why not? Naturally, that meant I, too, would be donning Bebe for the evening. And while I wouldn’t describe myself as a Bebe girl (I can’t say I’ve ever worn so much plastic pizzazz), as you can see, the dress itself was certainly a party.

Night Lines: The ICA Bash

1196789016The Liberty Hotel set the standard for the season with its over-the-top November opening bash (champagne and mug shots, anyone?). Last night, the ICA more than measured up with its on-site one-year anniversary party, complete with a New York-worthy runway show by Salvatore Ferragamo.

Bostonista braved the cold and traveled to Southie—in a collective eight inches of heel—to survey the scene at the city’s newest museum. Despite the plastic wineglasses, the vibe was cool luxury in the made-over lobby. (more…)

The Debut of Bostonista

1196700505Welcome to Bostonista, where we’ll be bringing you daily style news (if not always stylish news, like, say, how I was completely unprepared for this weather and now I’ve got a pair of wet Uggs soaking the carpet beneath my desk, an admission many would take as evidence I’ve got the wrong job. But whatever—they’re just boots).

We’ll discuss when to say no to a trend (more than you might think), how much is too much to pay for a haircut, and how to look decent at work when the weather gets like this. We’ll report on new stores, uncover the city’s best sales (and how to get the best deals at them), and help you find just about anything, from eco-friendly bedding to the perfect pair of black flats to the best running watch to a shower curtain decorated with hunks of meat (or, um, not).
